I have a 03 dakota quad cab 4x4. When I test drove the truck it had a check engine light on. We brought my friends code reader and looked at it and it was an evap code. The guy I was gonna buy it from said he would get it fixed when he smogged it. Anyway he said a few days later after we left the code went off and when he took it in they didn't find anything wrong, I bought the truck on 9/11, it was in the shop getting new ball joints and tires, I got it back last week and drove it a couple days and the Check engine light came on again. I hooked it up to the code reader again and came up with 2 codes. p0441-EVAP Purge Flow Monitor Fault came up twice but one was pending. My my friend said that evap is just the smog equipment and wont affect anything else. The truck is smoged for a year and a half so my question is what dose this code mean, and how quick should i get it fixed?
 
Sunland? As in California? Evap codes do not affect the drivability of the automobile. It will not cause any harm while driving the truck between now and the next smog test. However, since the MIL is illuminated for an emissions related fault it will have to be corrected before its next smog inspection.

Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
What does that mean?

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.

Symptoms

Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light.
Causes

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

* Bad vacuum switch
* Broken or damaged EVAP line or canister
* Open in PCM purge command circuit
* Open or short in Voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
* Faulty purge solenoid
* Restriction in EVAP solenoid, line or canister
* Corrosion or resistance in purge connector
* Bad PCM

Possible Solutions

With a P0441 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

* Common Chrysler fix - Replace Leak Detection Pump / LDP
* Repair damaged EVAP lines or canister
* Repair open or short in voltage feed circuit to Purge Solenoid
* Repair open in PCM purge command circuit
* Replace purge Solenoid
* Replace vacuum switch
* Repair restriction in Evap line or canister or soleniod
* Repair resistance in purge connector
* Replace PCM
 
most of the evap equipment are behind/under the battery. Look between the battery box and the fender for the purge solenoid and just behind the battery box (towards the firewall), under the PDC for the pump. I had an evap code on forever and I could never figure it out, until I pulled my battery tray out and found some random vac lines that were hidden under there had split.

If you don't know where they are, they are really easy to miss

well, my code came back the other day so i went searching.... I did find the can under the pdc and started following the lines. found one going to a line with a tire valve and label that said no more than 1 psi. not sure where thats going but i did find a split line at the valve. i cut the line back some and reconnected but i'm still having the hard shift and code. not much time after to check more. just one question. what is the thick hose leaving the purge and where does it go?
 
That tire valve is a test port. It's just there so you can hook a scanner to it and test the evap system. FWIW, that's where mine failed too. I actually found the hose in two pieces... minor leak 'eh?

Now that you have it fixed, reset the PCM or clear the codes with a scanner and see if they don't go away. It takes something like 20 on/off cycles before they clear by themselves.

That thick hose goes to the charcoal filter off the gas tank. The gas tank vents through a filter that stores the vapors, then every now and then the pump kicks on and purges the canister.

I also don't think that hard shifting is evap related.

the hard shift started i had left my xm plugged in sitting for a week and ran the battery dead. today it was shifting better for some reason. its day to day
