Is there anything I can do to safely lean out my fuel mix for an etest?

I have true duals on my R/T with Magnaflow cats, been on there for 2 1/2 years, passed one etest 2 years ago and now it failed badly.... I can't really afford to replace the cats so I'm wondering if I can so anything to get it to pass, like block off the air flow a little or run it with my cutouts cracked open?.... I think it would sense insufficient flow but I really don't know

at 40km/h @ 1223rpm FAIL
HC ppm (limit) 50 - (reading) 83
C0% (limit) 0.28 - (reading) 0.53
NO ppm (limit) 0548 - (reading) 1681

Idle @ 603rpm PASS
HC ppm (limit) 150 - (reading) 55
C0% (limit) 0.7 - (reading) 0.11

Magnaflow won't do anything cause they are only warrantied for 2 years, I can buy new ones and send them mine for testing and IF they determine the cats are faulty I'll get refunded for the new ones.... but we all know they're just gonna tell me the were over heated or my motor screwed them up.

Are all of your emissions devices working?

Stopped up PCV can lead to high HC. High NOx tells me the EGR isn't working properly. High CO leads me to think the o2's aren't working properly.

PCV's not that old.... I'll check it in the morning anyway

Don't have an egr, and I'm getting the truck scanned on monday to check the 02's

I should also mention it's 50* tonight and the truck has a 195 t-stat

What modifications are done to your engine?

How old are the O2 sensors?

got e85 anywhere? the alcohol will burn clean enough to pass emissions testing, put just enough in to get you to the station, do the test, and go to the gas station to top off on REAL gas, and drive like a freaggin grandma with the E85 in there.

you can also "clean out" your motor, get it good and hot, then take the airhat off, hold the throttle open with your hand so you're at around 2000 rpm, and slowly trickle water down the intake, but be sure to do it very slowly so you don't hydrolock a cylinder! I always used a squirt bottle to do this, spraying/squirting it as fast and hard as I could, so lots of water, but not a "puddle" flowing through the intake--don't wanna hydro lock it!

that will steam clean your top end. might help.

the E85 will do the most help for you though.

If you could find or make a video of that (rental minivan maybe?) that would be a nice thing to see.. much rather see it before I try it on any vehicle.

Take a video!:mullet:

buy a case of the alcohol based gas treatment that keeps it from freezing. I used heat when I lived in anchorage.

run it down to about 1/8 of a tank (or lower). put in the case of heat and then drive it to the emmissions test center. it should pass. .

drive it till you think your going to run out then go fill it up.

we got a couple cars to pass that were a whole lot worse than your to pass that way

I'm not looking to start replacing parts, I'm dirt poor at the moment. I just want to know if there is any little tricks I can do to help me pass. IE disconnect a sensor, partially block off the intake, crack open my cutouts.... etc.

The O2's have been on at least as long as I've owned the truck(4years)... possibly since new. I'm getting them checked on monday

I'm not spraying water into my engine, no offense.

I've never seen E85 up here but I'll investigate

8 bucks a bottle (500ml) is a lot of dough if I'm buying a case, it would cost less to get 2 new cats

Hell no! not $8 a bottle.... get the inexpensive stuff. heat was like $1 a bottle when I was in AK.

get a case thats like $25 at sams or costco.

actually 100% isoproply alcohol is what your looking for

or methanol would work too if someone is really into drag racing and wants to give you a 1/2 gal.

Hey Justin - what about the "Guaranteed to Pass" stuff from Canadian tire - I think it is pretty much all alcohol, and it is like ten bucks for the bottle. They also claim to give you twice your money back if it doesn't work. I have never used it, but it might be worth at least checking it out.

Or instead of using water use seafoam.

that mopar cleaner is supposed to be even better (from other threads)

My suggestion with the case of fuel antifreeze was to change the chemical balance in the tank so that regardless of how it burns its burning "clean" fuel ie alcohol

I know plenty of drag racers but I don't think anyone runs methanol

I'll have to look for it.... I don't think i've seen that stuff in a while
