01 Rango, 235rwhp (according to sig)

Sounds like a 4.7L. Not sure where it is but someone posted a link for the Factory Service Manual, just do a search for it. It's available via PDF. I believe its for the dakotas, but the motor section should still help with your plans...

To my knowledge the valve cover gaskets are reusable, Intake/ TB gaskets may be as well, but I don't know. I have never done a cam install but I think you can install them without removing the heads, so you shouldn't have to drain the fluids. But I'm sure if I am wrong someone will call me out on it....

The T-Stat is on the bottom I believe and I've read that any 180 T-Stat will be fine, just that most people use the Jet brand.

people make it out to be horrible if you switch between the two. it's better to just pick one and stick with it. if i remember correctly, your truck has just under 100K miles on it. get some heavier synthetic and lucas oil stabilizer to replace 1 of those quarts.

Disregard the above post, that's advice for a 318/360.

You won't need any gaskets or fluids. Have some clean oil on hand (or assembly lube) to coat the cam bearings and the cam itself.

Changing the chains is a much more involved job, no need to do it unless you find some obvious damage (not likely).

Doing the cam swap, you won't get into anything near the t-stat, so you can save that for later. It's an easy job.

It wouldn't be neccesary unless you spill some fluids into the heads, but I might do an oil change after a short run time.

If I were to do a cam swap again, I'd replace the lash adjusters. Really easy once you're in there and worth doing IMO.

Just Curious Caulk but IDK where the lash adjusters are? I assume between the cam and valve spring but not sure.

And to Midnite have fun becasue getting to the cam is more than half the battle. They are a PITA to get to. I haven't put in my cams yet becasue I have been dreading getting all of the stuff out of the way and I'm not completely comfortable doing it on my own. I'm thinking in a couple months though when I'm back home I'm gonna go ahead and just do it though.

I will be interested to hear how it went for yah so be sure to keep us updated.

SOB!!! I just noticed something on the second pic that I posted, it looks like my head is cracked where the exhaust bolt goes into the head. WTF, how the hell did that happen, I guess this explains the oil that slowly accumulates on that header bolt. Can anybody confirm that? Anybody know if there is anything I can do about that? Shit!

The lash adjuster is under the rocker, opposite side of the cam as the valve spring. It sits down in that boss in the head, oil pressure keeps it snug against the rocker which keeps the slack out of the valvetrain. Once the cam is out (you can change them without removing the cam) all you do is pick up the rocker, swap lash adjusters and put the rocker back down.

As for the crack, I don't know what you're seeing. A fine crack like would be there (if there is one) likely wouldn't leak any oil and wouldn't be a problem right there. If it's seeping oil, the gasket is probably nicked there.

I did my HO cams something like 4 years ago and I don't have any leakage from my valve covers. Matter of fact, I don't think there is a wet spot on my engine anywhere.

Look where I circled in Green, the little bump that the header bolt screws into. I know that I have been losing oil form another spot on the VC but it is farther back. Now right there there has always been oil that gathers on the header bolt. Never knew why but it makes sense if that is a crack.

Ahh, I see what you're looking at.

Appears to me that it could be from manufacturing (QC should see that defect though). More likely there was something in the hole when you installed the header bolt (liquid or solid) and the hydraulic pressure forced it's way through the thin wall section of the casting.

Find some high temp thread sealant or loc-tite, should fix it up just fine.

How should I apply it in this situation. I guess I don't really know what your thinking on how to fix it. Should I just apply it to the bolt next time I'm putting it in? How about some orange (I think) hi temp header RTV in th hole with the bolt? I mean they are stage 8 bolts but I am kinda hesitant to put some loc-tite on the bolt becasue I know it will most likely never come out again, lol.

If it were me I would try to match the body color, I like the way it looks when you tie body color into the engine bay. But, in your case that would be black, so I dunno. Maybe a nice Red  Up to your likes honestly.

well. wet, rainy and cold here. dropper her off at the friend shop today. going to work on her tomorrow and night, wed night adn possibly thursday night. bad thing is i have school on wed and thursday. so i may not get so in depth with the install after all. =(
**im thinking silver for the valve covers. to get your attention and match hte battery strap and fuse box cover..

**good news. got the intake intstalled... and the valve covers are being painted silver... so, the cams are going in tonight/tomorrow. maybe tomorrow i can be there to snp some pics and what not...

got the intake installed and valve covers painted. BUT some bad news. can't get the "cam cap" bolts off? I belive that's what they were called. I forgot now. but some kind of bolts on the cams that cat be removed. they feel as though they wil be broken before they come loose. least that's wat I'm told. is ths what I need that special too for??

#31 ·
apparently its the "cam cap bolts" that hold the cams to the engine head is what's not moving. so instead of attempting to remove them and break them, were thinking of leaving it alone for now and maybe I can tackle it voer the summer or take it to the dealership or something. he said he had all the specialty tools and stuff...

#33 ·
how could they replace a bad cam or bearing under warentee if they could not remove the caps? they will come off they are just really torqued in there.

or they are left hand threads (righty loosy, lefty tighty) to keep dummies from doing cam swaps.

well guys... im oggicially cam less!! im running no cams and have 100000+ horses! amazing eh?? but seriously though. i have the intake installed and the cams are still stock..... i didnt really fight with him on the cams b/c he was doing the install and w/e.... o ill take it to my other firneds shop and see whats up.. who knows, maybe i have a fluke?
