I noticed that my clear coat is peeling on my roof near the 3rd brake light. I think it started because of the last auto, touchless car wash.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Or stop it from spreading? Can clear be resanded and sprayed over?

It's going to spread, what needs to be done is it needs the whole roof to be re-painted, but in the end the whole truck's clear coat disinergrates

Yes that will work but you'll have to be very careful when wet sanding so you don't take off your paint. You may find it easier to just have the whole truck re-cleared. (would look a lot better) I doubt the rest of the roof has much clear coat on it anyways.

The clear coat Dodge used on our trucks is complete crap. If I had a dollar for every Dakota or Durango which developed clear coat rot before they were 5-10 years old, I'd be a rich man. I'm amazed there's never been a class-action lawsuit brought against them for this crappy product.

Funny thing is I never had a problem w/ clear coat rot. :huh:

the clear is rotting on the bed rails of my dak, but not the hood or roof.

My brother's red QC though, bed rails, roof, hood, fenders. It looks like total ass.

And I've been told that when your clear starts peeling, you're best off to repaint the whole truck, but it may be possible to sand off all the old clear and re-clear it. But the problem with that is that if you miss any spots wetsanding, the old clear still has the potential to peel again. On top of that, you have to worry about the new clear sticking to the old paint. If the new clear doesnt stick, you'll have to sand it all off, and repaint the truck.

Why risk it?

Yea it sucks. I got quoted $575 or so to repaint the whole roof. I eventually want to repaint the truck but that's later down the road. I didn't expect a 7yr old truck to be doing this already.

If things turn out how they are supposed to, I will be parking this in the garage full time and having another DD.

I assume he lives near the coast. Salt water and vehicles = fugly rust all over!

I want to paint the whole truck but funds don't permit that. I want to at least stop the whole truck from peeling at the moment and looking like ass until i get the whole thing painted.

I understand where you are coming from. I had it quoted to take sand it down and reshoot the whole roof.

I was hoping to only sand the surrounding area and "fixing" it for now.

just wait till your truck is a few years older and the paint rot is everywhere :rant:


If you want to redo your clear and stop it, do the whole truck. Either pay and have it done right (no macco) or have a professional there with you as you do it.

mine just made it to 13 and now its doing this and it spreads FAST!
