long story short, the 71 monte needs headers. it's a 400 (402) big block. what headers brands do you guys recommend and why. not looking for a race headers, just something a little above average.
thanks.
thanks.
more expensive, which is fine, but also what i have heard. The only brand I can recomend due to personal experiance is TA Performance, but that is becouse they build the best headers for Buick engines. Unfortunatly Buicks are the only engine/vehicle they build headers for. My brother had a set of Hedman Headers on 68 Polara w/ 383 and had no issues other than the paint burned off after a couple of years.
As far what to look for when shopping is look for mandrel bends for best flow. I also recomend get a set with at least a 3/8" thick flange. Anything thinner can warp causing issues with leaks. Also get a set that are ceramic coated (think Jet Hot). They will reduce under hood temps and will keep the headers from rusting, the paint WILL burn off over time (see above) don't let anyone tell you differant. They also look good.
thank you sir. After having several cars with headers over the years, I would not consider any that are not ceramic coated, they greatly reduce under hood temps plus they look good for years.
One benefit to non-emission control vehicles, the headers are considerably cheaper than their counterparts.
As mentioned look for thick mounting flanges also the thickest walled tubing, the lower the gauge # the thicker the material.
I have always had good luck going with the top name companies vs. trying to save a few dollars.
i think the above answer says it all.just remember, when ordering headers, order for a 70-72 chevelle (same as monte) and on a side note,i've always used hedman on chevies. The only brand I can recomend due to personal experiance is TA Performance, but that is becouse they build the best headers for Buick engines. Think this will help a bitwhat's the difference between thermal coated and ceramic coated ?
so i did a little searching on some monte carlo forums and most of the guys run either hooker or hedman headers.I dont have any first hand knowledge for that vehicle, but my only advice would be to search around on classic car forums. You car is pretty popular in the resto area, there has got to be a reputable header that many are buying. I also second the above posts about getting ceramic coated- A good friend of mine put a nice set of long tube headers on his 02 Mustang, they made the car sound great, they looked great at the time, and added noticable power gain-until they rusted through around the collector flange not even 2 years later. Waste of money for him since he didn't do it right the first time and get a quality ceramic coated.
