Well I think I want to gut the cats on my 4.7. From what I can see, I have 2 bolt on cats, one right after each header. I was wondering what the chances were of my truck throwing a code and weather or not it will run like crap. I am also curious how it will sound with my Flowmaster 40 Delta muffler.

It will throw a code and run like crap. Get an 02 simulator to solve it and it will run and sound good.

what to do?

Ive got a very similar issue and cant find what to do exactly.
ive got a 01' dakota 4.7 v8

its got the 3 cat system to cali emissions :( My passenger front cat is rattling. so my plan is to have the front cats gutted, bypass the third, and run a aftermarket cat back system. however of cores im concerned about throwing codes. Do i get a simulator for the 2 post cat sensors? tie them to the frame? will the spark plug anti fouler system work? i understand that my second sensor just needs a different reading than the first, but what about the heating aspect? will it not throw a code for that if tied to the frame? too many variables, im not knowledgeable enough, some insight here would be great, thanks.

p.s if i need sims what do i get? o2simulator.com universals? (if so do i need the heat sensor sim?) fastman??? please feed me with knowledge :p. o and im not concered about emission tests, none'a that around here

It will run, but run codes. Up until 2000, 50/50 on 2000 models you can go without an o2 sim.

You have 2 sensors, pre cat and aft cat (before and after). The pre(first) judges air and fuel for combustion based upon burned fuel. Aft/second basically tells the pcm/computer that the cat is or isn't working.

The sim fools the computer in thinking that the cat is working(good/present).

Why dont you just go and install some new cats? its proven that running without cats on a newer vehicle does not do a whole lot. the HP gains are so minimal. The only way you gain HP is if the cats that ae on there are melted or clogged up.

I don't really understand the thrill with gutting or removing cats either. I have no emmissions testing here, and I will still replace them if they fail. I've ran my car without for quite some time(ever since I boosted it) and it stinks, its dirty, no reason to throw that stuff into the air.

Word. I've never known anyone to get hassled about cats in MN, but I still run them on my newer stuff. My friends hassle me about getting rid of it, but hell, I just bought a new one to replace the rattly one on my truck. I'm not building a race truck, so no reason for me not to have one. Also, I won't have any issues when I go to sell it and some hippie wants to buy it.

What one really needs to be concerned with is it's illegal to remove/mod a cat.
matters not whether you have emissions testing, it's illegal.

Even at that, you can get higher flowing cats that create no restrictions in your exhaust and still do the job. The only reason I don't have cats is because the previous owner had cut them out. When I do the engine in mine, I will have cats in it.
