I blew my 2001 4.7 out of my Dakota at 134K miles. I've been without a truck for almost 4 months now. My price I got for a rebuild with R&R was almost $3000. I found a motor in a full size Dodge 1500 with the 4.7 with 30k miles. I've seen and heard the motor run. Will the basic motor work in my Dakota without issues. I need to know by Wensday, thats when he wants to start working on it. You can email me at wrnglr73@hotmail.com. Thanks Greg.

If it is an 02, you're probably fine. Anything newer, definetly not. The reluctor rings on the cam and crank will not work with your PCM. You could swap the reluctor ring on the cam easily, the crank isn't so easy. I'm not sure what the procedure is, but you'll at least have to tear the engine down.

3000 is cheap for a rebuild with labor.

Well the motor is out of an '03 Ram 1500 2wd and my cost will be $500 for the entire motor with everything attached. The used junk yard motors are running $2000 and they have anywhere from 40K to 90k miles on them for the '01 Dakota motor.

I guess now it comes down to the pros and cons of it and cost. I'm looking at $3000 for a rebuilt with a 5yr or 100k mi. Warranty, or $2000ish to have the '03 motor swapped in. Damn why can't it be as cheap and easy as a 350 swap!

Not gonna work. You'll have to switch the reluctor rings. The 03 engine will have reluctor rings for a NGC engine management system, your 01 truck has JTEC and they are non compatible.
Do we have a section that outlines the basic swap roadblocks? I've read HemiDak's swap thread & seen the discussion about the IP swapping, etc. I can dream up engine/transmission/truck combos better than I can build them. Damn reality.
