I've been thinking about getting into making things out of carbon fiber, it looks like something I'd have fun doing. So, my question is, what would you guys like to have made in CF?

Keep in mind that I'm going to be starting with small and simple pieces, like battery hold downs, fuse box covers, maybe a few smaller interiour pieces like door handles and smaller trim pieces. If I get good at the smaller peices I may tackle larger parts like maybe a dash or a body panel.

So.... what would you guys like to see made, and how much would you be willing to pay for said piece?

id have to see the work, but i was thinking of sending my wood grain peices off to "phoenix imaging" to et dont in an aluminum color CF.

dome light console?
over head consol?
gas cap?
gauges?
steering wheel center?
wheel center caps?

good idea. I'll see what I can come up with and find a digital camera to post pics. I'm going to be making molds out of the original part, and vacuum bag the CF into the mold to get a perfect part every time. The goal is to get good molds so that I can mass produce a product.

believe me, carbon fiber is something that's very hard to get to look real due the very 3 dimensional nature of it

sounds like a winner right there!!!!

I'd be interested in 01'+ door handles...

yeah let me know what ya do, I already have the over head counsole and window switches in blue carbon fiber, id be intrested in some more parts done :mullet:

you'd have to send me a set to make molds from, my truck is a 00

that will come much later, if I decide to tackle projects that large at all.
Yea well I'd be the first one to buy CF body panels...been wanting fiberglass ones for a while now.

As for the door handles, you think they'd come out top notch? And fit well and all? I can send you my door handles but don't screw them up lol.

Oh and yea, I mean interior door handles, but you think you could do exterior door handles?

how would you guys feel about a part that's made out of a dyed fiberglass that's made to look like Carbon Fiber, as opposed to using real carbon fiber, which costs 3 times as much?

I wouldnt use the black fiberglass for anything structural, only for show peices.

can you tell the difference?

Also, I found some other neat fabrics:

aluminized fiberglass

Kevlar/carbon twill

I'd want true CF...either real or don't do it at all. I'll have a show truck lol. But I wouldn't mind some fake CF parts. I'm really interested in interior/exterior door handles man in real CF. Possible?

I wont be doing any real parts in CF for a while, the first batch of parts will be in black twill weave fiberglass. Carbon fiber, from the same website, is roughly 4 times the price of fiberglass. Don't worry, the price will be adjusted accordingly for any parts I make out of either material. Most cosmetic parts will only have the outmost visible layer done in CF,Kevlar, or Black Fiberglass, with all layers under it done in fiberglass. When I start making large parts, I might think about making parts out of solid CF, excepting hoods, which will still have Fiberglass frames.

Which would you rather pay? $60 for a set of door handles and tailgate latch in fake CF or $180 for real CF, that looks exactly the same as the fake CF?

But don't worry, assuming I can get my grubby little paws on a working digital camera, I will take high-res pics of anything and everything I make, whether it's made of CF, fiberglass, or Kevlar. Personally I'm going to be doing most of my truck's interior in Blue Kevlar.

Parts I'm going to be making, in order(or close to it):

Fuse box lid.
14" round air cleaner lid
exterior door handles
interior Door Handles
overhead console
A pillers
Dash bezel(the removeable part that holds the A/C vents and the guages in and such)

Please understand that I'm relatively broke, and dont have any the materials to make anything yet. If you're impatient, you're more than welcome to make a 'donation' to my composites funds, and you'll get first dibs on a part or two :p

(only joking, I dont like having to make that kind of commitment :p)

 To me real is it...I'd have to see the difference man.

then you'll have to wait a while then. The first few batches of parts I make will not be carbon fiber, they will be the 'fake CF'

You might change your mind when I get a couple parts made up and photos up of them.
Gave ya rep! Ahead of time
