Well after a long but good day at work yesterday, I get in my truck in the parking lot and check for any messages on my cell phone. I had one message which was my dad, who was really upset and said that someone had hit and killed my dog. I only had him for a couple of months which made the situation worse. However what I cannot understand and cannot stand, is a person who hits somebody's pet but doesn't have enough decency to stop by and let you know what had happened, they keep driving as if the animal was nothing more than a squirrel or rabbit...this is someone's pet, not some wild animal. Even if they didn't know who the dog belonged too they could have went to the nearest house (which in this case was mine) and tell a neighbor that they hit a dog but didn't know who it belonged too. To top off the situation someone stopped by my dog and removed all the tags from his collar...for what, I have no idea? I still have no idea how the hell my dog even got out of his pen in the first place, its over 6' tall, the door was secured when I checked after he was killed, no spots were dug under the frame where he could escape, my dad and I think maybe someone let him out but we live on 65 acres so there aren't a lot of people walking around and the pen is in the back of the house. What started off as a good day turned into one of the lousiest days in quite a while, and with all the cold weather we've been having, digging him a grave will be quite a chore.

Losing pets...especially dogs is like losing a close family member, I only had Bentley for about 3 months too. It would have been nice for the person that hit him to stop by and say so. But this is a world where people dont have "the time" to stop by and do the right thing, I guess.

Yeah, I'd like to know where the tags are, we thought maybe whoever hit him took them off to turn into the police but so far I haven't been contacted by anyone, but if you're gonna go through the trouble of taking the tags off wouldn't it be easier to stop by a house? My dad said he was hit about 150' above the mailbox, my nearest neighbor is about 1/4 mile from me so it shouldn't have been to hard to guess what house the dog belonged too. Too make matters worse the ground up here is nothing but stones so I guess I'll have to bury him at my mom's place next to her dog.

What kind of dog was he? Do you have any pics? Sorry for the loss man...

He was a mix, I adopted him from a local shelter. We knew he had some pit bull in him and we were guessing australian shepard. He was multi colored, white body, with brown, red and black patterns. The only pics I have of him are on my cell phone and I cant figure out how to transfer them to my pc, this incident makes me wish I took more pics of him using a camera...guess I took for granted that he was a year old and nothing would happen to him, I was wrong.

i couldn't be any sorrier for your loss. I can't imagine how hard it must be. I couldn't imagine losing my pup. she's been a part of my life since I was 6 years old. I wish you all the courage to work through this because as people have said, losing a dog is like losing a family member because these animals will give you unconditional love

I feel your pain! :sorry: I've buried 3 of our family pets (dogs) and all were due to being hit by cars. It felt like I was burying a family member with every one of them. We have since installed an invisible fence and the 2 we have now won't go near it. Gives us a lot of peace of mind!

Very sorry to hear man

sorry to hear my friend.its never easy to let any part of our family go...i have never understood how someone could hit an animal,,and in this circumstance your dog,,and not have the common courtesy to make sure someone knew...much less to remove the poor things collar..that rediculous..i hit a dog once,,poor thing just ran right out in front of me and there was no way i could avoid it,and immediately i pulled over and stood bye with it,,checking with what neighbors i could get to answet their door, but alas noone knew whos dog it was,,so i had to call the pound to come pick her up..broke my heart too see it writhing in pain..

That sucks man.i remember years ago our dog got out of the yard.We got a call from one of our neibours saying the herd a loud yelp,so they looked out the window and saw our dog in the middle of the road.My dad ran down there to see,and all i can remember is him carrying him home limp in his arms. That was some sad shit,i wish we could have caught that prick and given him a beating..
