My engine went out about 2 months ago or so(maybe less, hard to rememeber). Its been sitting in the parking lot at my apartment since then.. I am thinking maybe I should just rebuild the engine. The transmission felt good still, clutch was just redone, etc etc.

Its 100% the "cheapest" way to go on it. Just gotta find a shop in town and get some quotes..

can anyone think of a good reason NOT to rebuild it? It was a 2.5l with 144k on it at death. Also, any idea on cost? I figure 3-4k?

You can have somebody rebuild it and KNOW that it will work like a brand new engine, or you can buy one and drop it in. Only thing is.. the rebuilt engine will likely cost more, but you'll know it will be reliable whereas the used one may or may not be.

i cant see any reason not to rebuild it other than to just pick up a good used motor and drop it in. It will likely be cheaper.

yep there was a guy while back in another thread that paid i think it was bought 800 for a junkyard v6,which i dont see putting that much into a v6 when you can get a 318 or 360 for roughly same...

also bud didnt see if yours was an auto or manual,,only seen you saying v6 4x4..

Just Rebuilt a 89 3.9 and am over the cost of buying a reman motor. Of course I kept my original engine numbers that can with the truck but after doing the heads and buying a master rebuild kit and oversized pistons and all the other fun stuff am up to around $1,300.00 and not done yet. Still need to buy hoses belts and have the air fixed. If you go online and put in reman motor 7 year you will find alot of dealers that will sell you a long block that has a 7 year 70,000 mile warranty. Make sure that you read the part that requires installing a new oil pump for that warranty to be in effect. Have fun

whenever my engine decides to go, im going to rebuild my 2.5.....cams, header, intake. ive been doing a lot of research on the jeep forums (same engine) and you can easily get 200 hp and still be at 20 mpg city :mullet:
