talked to a guy at a muffler shop and he said the dakotas have a higher flow cat than most aftermarket highflow cats. Is this true??

He didn't say they were good quality, but that they were higher flow than most. He suggested that I just cut the pipe off at the cat and weld a 3" pipe to it.

thats funny, in PA we used to have a "sniffed" smog test. There was a new smog test released for 97+ (I believe, don't quote me) vehicles that simply plugs into the diag port and checks to make sure all sensors are functioning correctly, including the downstream o2s, so you'd better get a sim box if you dont have a cat. Oh and i know, because I just performed my own emission test on my dak, at my fathers dealership.

My understanding of the new PA smog test is it's simple a gastank pressure test. They hook up a computer to your gastank to check for leaks.. It's not a full out smog test.. My IROC (Straight Piped Cat) passed with no problems..

In any case if you don't have emmitions testing in your state I still suggest putting the old casing over the pipe to make it look like the cat is still there..

Once the emissions have been modified you no longer will be able to trade in the truck. Dealers will not take it in trade. Each state can at any point in time be forced by the EPA to start stringent testing. Ohio just a couple of years back had the testing then it went away and now it is back.

Testing is based on air sampling and once it reaches a certain level the State must comply with Federal standards of testing.
