Okay, so I'm waiting for my 20" R/T wheels and I'm not sure what to do about tire size. I've got the hotchkis tvs, keep that in mind. What I'd like to do is a 255/40/20 up front (28.03") and a 295/40/20 in the back (29.29"). What I was wondered was is that 295 too wide to run in back on my rims, I'm thinking the R/T's are 9" wide, because I thought I remember several guys running that wide a tire on these wheels. My second question is how will having a taller tire in the back affect the driving and tire wear? If anyone out there is running either size tire with the tvs could you please post some pics for me or if anyone knows where they've seen some pics could you post me a link, I appreciate the help.

having a taller rear tires doesn't allow for tire rotations. mine haven't been rotated for about 12000 miles.

only when cornering do i rub with 275/35/20 fronts and 275/45/20 rears. the fronts grab a lot of the fender flare and have gouges in them. rears not so bad but they do hit the flare.

i'm lowered on hotchkis, but my truck is club cab weighing in at around 4600 pounds

Yeah, your tire is about .4" shorter than what I'm wanting in the front but you are wider and you said you grab fender and I definitely don't want to do that. Maybe I should just go with the 255/35/20, it's just that in the pictures I've seen there doesn't seem to be much of a sidewall. What I'm more concerned about is the rear tire. I just want to know if a 295 will fit the R/T rims.

you'd be fine with the sizes u wanted to run... i know steve (sincityr/t) is running 275/35/20 front and 295/40/20 rear without probs. you should be fine with a 255/40 up front, hell im lowered 3/4 and almost switched to a 255/40 to try and fill some of my wheel gap. (now i decided to just go lower) you will be fine with a 295/40 on the R/T wheel. theres a guy selling his r/t in the for sale section and he has the hotchkis with 295/45/20 (rear) on the r/t rims

I wouldnt recomment the 255/40. The tire seems like it wouldnt be wide enough for the rim, IMO. I have an 8.5" rim now with 255/40's and the rim and tires are are nice and flush with each other... like they are the same width. Its perfect to me.
But, depends on if you like the rims sticking out past the tires much or not...
I thought the 20" R/Ts were wider than 9 inches? My Chromies were placed in the same box my new rims came in and they stuck up a little past the box. And the outside of the box measured 10" tall.

I hear that even if a rim is said to be 8.5" or 10" wide... it may actually be wider... not sure if they include the lips into the measurements. Or something... not sure how to explain it... :(

I had 275/40's on my R/T 20s and the rim lip and the side wall were flush with each other ...I'd look into a 275/35 though... the fronts rubbed a lot (especially when they were on Brad's R/T)

Tire Tech Information

Width x Aspect Ratio = Section Height
Section Height x 2 = Combined Section Height
Combined Section Height + Wheel Diameter = Tire Diameter

Example: 185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

185mm x .60=111mm
111mm x 2=222mm
222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

255/40/20

Divide the Width (255mm) by 25.4 = 10.04 inches

Multiply 10.04 by 40% (0.40) = 4.02"

Supposedly my tire is 10.04 inches wide has a sidewall of 4.02 inches (this is from the top of the rim lip to the top of the tread... it sounds like a lot, but I just went to measure mine, and its pretty accurate for me)

Boss states my rims are 8.5" (prolly more like 9" after manufacturing, etc etc & blah blah blah...)
and my tires are 255/40/20...

It may be hard to tell, but these are the R/Ts with 275/40/20s

Ok, I'll quit takin over your thread now, haha

I appreciate the help. I've looked at tires so much before I have those formulas memorized. I'm very positive the 20" rt's are the same width as the stock 17" and they came with a 255, which is plenty wide enough for me. I'm more concerned with rubbing on the inner wheel well because that is what I'm doing now with a 265/55 so if I switch to a 255/40/20 it will be a tad shorter and a bit less wide. It may be one of those "I won't know until I try it" kinda deals. Also, you sold your rims to my good buddy Kyle. Kyle and I go way back since we were little ones.

Kewl! :)
small world, lol...

the 255s would help a little (obviously they are still wide enough to hit the finder - thats a given, haha :p). luckily my truck hits bumpstops before tire so I dont have a problem at all (other than the occasional hammering of the rear stops on my axle, which is why im hesitant on an inframe c-notch. might end up hitting tire first then.)

just depends on your preferences of the look... I think Jay has a 245 on his 17" R/Ts... talk about narrow, whew!

Tell Kyle to take some pics of the R/T rims when he gets them installed... I wanna see, hehehe.
I guess hes putting them on the Rango?
Last I saw he was trying to sell the Dak...

Good luck with choosing tho ;)

He doesn't know what he is doing with the dak. First he is going to keep it, then he is going to sell it, a few days ago he said he is going to keep it again. I'm just trying to convince him to sell me his M-1 before he sells it lol. I'll definitely tell him to get some pics with the rims. I just paid for my 20's earlier today and they should ship out by the end of this week so maybe we can get them on together. It's always fun to have a few d's rolling together.

Yep it is a small world. Ryan is the one that brought me into the R/T world and im glad he did! :mullet:

They are going on the Durango for sure. Think im going to keep the yellow truck just cant seem to part ways with it. Its a fun truck. Anyways, I will post up pics but i gotta get some dough for tires first. Im going to use 275/45/20 on the rango bc its only .3 inches shorter then whats on there now so it will be good. I hate choosing tires after looking at so many variations.

Goodluck on your tire deciding Ryan!

I've decided that I'm going to use Toyo Proxes S/T 255/40/20 up front and 295/40/20 in the back. Now I just need to decide if I am going to paint them or not. I did find those tires I want on ebay and they are like $580 for all four plus whatever shipping would cost.

I'd add 4.56 gears if you're running 20's AND a 29" tire.
Eh, gears are way low on my list of things to do. And trust me, it's a long list. I think after I get my wheels on I'm going to look into painting my door handles and changing my tails out for a set of stockers and just shade them.

after having the 275/40/20's on my front with the hotchkis drop, i do not suggest going that size. They WILL rub. (more so on the driver side when your in it)I would go with the 35 series sidewall to avoid that problem.

I cant say about the 295 series on the rear, most run 275 with no problems.

good luck in whatever you choose!

All that paint isn't gonna make you any faster with those heavy wheels and tall tires, just sayin....

theres a few ppl that run 295/40 out back with a hotckis drop. steve is running them right now and i know the pro-zen guy is running them as well. this guy is running 275/40/20 and 295/45/20 on a 3/3 drop
