rear end

Not that ive heard but I know of a few that use the 8 3/4 rear end. its narrower and allows ya to run wider rims.
I heard this as well but can't get a clear answer witch one fit's directly in with no mod's!! so this is why I'm thinking gen-3 for my gen-2! they are a little wider but I think the spring purge's are in the same spot's!! I don't mine lite mod's but don't really want to get into moving spring mount's and all that stuff!!! (NO TIME WORK TO MUCH)

i remember reading that the 8 3/4 out of a 73 road runner fits very closely

The frame is wider..... DTS built me a Dana 60 for my Dakota..... The first axle they sent was for a Gen 3 truck...... I got it home and went? Hum...what the? who the?.....that's alot wider.....Back it went along with the original axle...... lot's of fun..... The really bad part of trying this would be the rim offset..... even if you could bolt it in..... If you going to go through all that trouble do a Dana or a 8 3/4.... BTW the Dana is heavier but you never going to break it.... The center sections of the 8 3/4 can be pricey too....
