I figured this truck is quite similar to dakotas, so its worth a shot.

First off, its my dad's 95 Ram 1500 4x4 with a 360. When you go to start it up it will crank and crank and wont start (sometimes it will after a while of cranking). Then on your 2nd time cranking it, it will start up. The truck always starts.

This problem has seen mechanics and they all GUESS fuel pump, but they have no clue. This has been going on for a couple years now.

The only other thing is that the CEL comes on periodically, which we know (from a scan tool) is an EGR related problem (we took the EGR off of it)

Any ideas what could be going on?

How does it run? Did any of the techs ever do a fuel pressure test while crankin, and not starting?
It runs smooth as a top, and I dont know if they pressure tested it.

As far as I remember, if you turn the key on, you hear the pump pressurize, then stop, as per normal i believe (its not like it runs for a while, because the fuel ran back or something)

the pump i believe should run the whole time the key is in the on position, to keep the fuel line pressuerized. get a gauge and see where its at with the key in the on position, then with it finally running. may also be a faulty coil too. ive had a few go bad on me. check the battery voltage, and check your alternator too. but a meter on it and see if the voltage on them both is good. anything higher than 12.5 and below 14.5 is good. (obviously the closer to the higher number the better)
