I am going to do a conversion on my 98 Durango. I am trying to decide between a 5.7 HEMI, a built big block of some flavor (383,426,440, or maybe a "hybrid" 400 with a 440 crank). Maybe a 3.9 Cummins with a P-pump, or a 5.9 Cummins of undecided flavor.
I have pretty well ruled out the 5.7 HEMI. There is sooooo much more that can be done with a big block. I would love to build a MPFI big block, and adapt a 47RE overdrive on it.
The route I will probably take is the Cummins though. I would love to have the ultimate in power AND mileage, and the Cummins seems the best choice. I want to do a 5.9 for the power, but the lighter weight 3.9 is definately interesting to me. I like the idea of having a lightweight engine for off roading but still be able to pull down some serious power and mileage. Should be able to get 500RWHP out of the 3.9 and still pull off 25+ MPG.
