I accidentally posted this in the gen III subforum so I figured I would re-post in the correct subforum lol.

I've been scouring this forum and the internet at large in an attempt to figure out what transmission is in my dak. I've got a 99 5.2L Sport 4x4 w/auto trans. I've gotten different answers from multiple VIN "decoders" telling me it's a 44RE or a 46RE while my Haynes manual says the V8s all came with 46RE I believe. I've tried finding a stamp on the trans but couldn't find one and didn't see any info on the truck itself. Does anyone know whether it's a 44 or 46 or how I can tell which it has?

A couple guys helped me out despite being in the wrong subforum and now I'm leaning more towards it having a 44RE but just wanted to verify.

Look at the pan shape that will tell the story. If the right front corner just has a radiused corner of a box" look it's a 44. If it has a bump out in the area below the dipstick entrance hole it's a 46
Every V8 Dakota or Durango I have had, had has been a 46.
I put a 46 in a 94 Dakota behind a 3.9 that had either a 42 or a 44 and it bolted right in , same length driveshaft and all.

No that isn't a 46. I meant along the front edge to the side edge of the case. Not the indented bottom of the pan
Why do you need to know? There is alot the same between them. And you can interchange them.
Is your current trans acting up? What are you trying to do? Look at the underside of the hood and see if the original "options" sticker is still there that spells it out exactly.

Oooh ok. Well I'm in the process of restoring it more or less. Didn't run when I got it, replaced a bunch of stuff, got it running and driving. It seems to shift alright, ive only driven it around the block a couple times since i got it running though. but there is a whine that gets a little louder with acceleration and when I let off the gas it kinda sounds/feels like its in a lower gear if that makes sense. Idk, im used to Chevys, not real familiar with Dodge yet. Noticed the fluid level is a little high and Idk when the last time the filters or fluid were replaced. Also saw that Dorman makes an OE replacement pan with a drain plug so I wanted to swap the old one out for that while I was changing the fluid.

The only options sticker I found is in the glove box and all it says is Transmission: 4-Speed Automatic. Looks like there used to be a sticker on the passenger side of the trans but it peeled off and only the corner of a bar code remains.

So the ID stamped on the driver side of the trans above the pan is PK52119817AA-1009-1101 which, if the results of my Google search is correct it's a 44RE. The 2nd set of numbers is the build date right? 10/09?

I can see the pan being slightly different, but that could be just if it’s 4x4 or 4x2. If I remember the rebuild manual correctly for the 46re I rebuilt, the only significant difference between the 44 re and 46re is the number of clutches they have in each clutch pack, with the 46 having more. I believe they are the same gears too. The 42re is the same throughout except in OD and first gear, with a larger first gear and smaller OD gear, and even less clutches in each clutch pack. Length, bolt pattern are all the same, as well as transmission pump.
Hope this helps
