I have a 2000 Durango RT and the tranny slips and shudders when going into OD. It is better to have it rebuilt or buy a remanufactured one? What does a rebuild usually cost anyway?

Kanter,

How many mile you have on yours? My 01' seems to be fine. When was the last time you had a service on that area? I wonder if you just need a flush and fresh tranny fluid. Check it out unless your dealership told you that you trashed it.

The Durango RT has 85k miles on it. When it goes into OD, it feels like I ran over a rumble strip. If I put it to the floor, it shifts real nice and firm and runs like a champ. The next time I have the oil changed Ill have them change the tranny fluid too. Is there anything I can add to the fluid to help with this for a little while. Almost all the miles on the Durango are hwy.

Bring it to a reputable Durango mechanic. I took mine to a Durango specialist for a $300 tranny service about 6 months after a $100 Jiffy lube service. For 3 bills he dropped the pan, changed the filter and adjusted the bands. And replaced the fluids. For $100, JL hooked up a resevoir to the tranny cooler lines and replaced all the fluid. JL claimed that they were backflushing the system and cleaning the filter. :bs2:
My symptoms were that the tranny seemed to slip or take too long to slip into gear under normal driving. Then it would tend to kinda slam into the next gear. That was around 75kmi. I'm up 95K now and it still shifts like butter.

Had similar problems with my '01 Durango. But my problem didn't start until I got the fluid changed. It would jump in and out of OD, and shudder when shifting. Turns out the place that changed the fluid replaced it with Dex III, instead of the recommended ATF+4. Did the service over again myself, used a factory filter and correct fluid, and my problem was solved. If you haven't changed the fluid and filter in a while, do it, but use the ATF+4.

What ever you do, do not have the trans flushed. Their should be a magnet on the bottom of the pan which collects any metal shavings you get from normal operation.
Flushing the trans stirs everything and gets all of the contamination back where it should not be.

A fluid and filter change is something you can do yourself. Can be messy, and you should add a drain plug to the pan while your at it but it it is somewhere to start.

I have 122,000 on my trans, I bracket race it and bought the truck used. With regular maintance "fluid/filter band adj." I have not had any problems.

I like the plug in the pan idea. I was reading a while back about how to adjust the bands and the bottom line was that you need to know what you're doing. Having NOT done a search on this site yet, is it all that easy for a DIYer to adjust them?

Its been a little over a month and the tranny problem is getting a little worse. I took it to a shop and they told me I need a rebuild. Im going to take the RT to the Dodge dealer and see what they say.

I had a shop do a fluid change and they said they used ATF4+. They are now telling me I need a rebuild. The tranny shifts great except when cruising and it shifts into OD. Then it vibrates the Durango and finally shifts. Im going to keep driving it for awhile.

Is there a way to tell if its ATF4+ or if they used the wrong fluid?

I thought I would bring this back up and update. I went to Dodge and had a mechanic ride with me and he hooked up his computer. He said its not a real problem but its the tranny locking and unlocking. He said its good to go for awhile.

Similar problem with my 2000

I had very similar symptoms with my 2000. Dealer stated it was fine.

While out driving months later, I put it in neutral while my son stepped in, dropped back to drive and shortly therre after noticed it would not shift at all from 2 to 3 gears.

Pulled over checked the fluid, nice and red, full, no burnt odor, no visible metallic particles.

We stopped and ate then lo and behold it shifted fine all the way home. As I was pulling into the driveway,Check engine light appears. Actually, good news.

Grabbed the Superchips Tuner, read the code, and it was a speed shaft sensor located at the rear of the trans.

Picked one up Saturday morning, replaced the sensor in less than three minutes. By the way the part was only $32.00.

Hate to see what the dealer would charge.

I have now driven several weeks and the trans shifts better, it has not shuddered one time since replacing, and no longer jumps in and out of OD.

It may be worth the price to change it out and see if it cures your issues.

The old sensor also has a magnet on the tip. and it did have the normal wear of metallic particles attached.

Good luck.

trans codes/limp mode

my durango has been acting up the last two month. don't know if
probs are related or not but this is the time line of events. First the check engine light
kept coming on and off. Thought maybe bad gas . took to auto zone while it was on no
code came up. then the speedo started not reading correctly. then abs light came on,
brake light came on, and the engine light stayed on and trans went in to limp mode.. had code read again. said bad speed
sensor. replaced both sensors. disconnected battery and restarted. all lights went off
: but the check engine light is still on and it is still in limp mode.
checked code again. now says p0753 shift solenoid a, p1765 , and
pending code was p0443. Any suggestions? I just want it to run well enough so that I can trade it in.
