Anyone know of a good exhaust shop that does custom work? I have quotes for Hot Rod Scott's and Quick Muffler and, including header install, I'm looking at over $2000 in each place!

Stainless 2.5 full dual system, X=Pipe, high-flow cats, retain the O2 sensors finishing through Flowmaster SUV mufflers. Everyone wants $400 to install headers I supply, between $1450-$1700 + tax for everything else!

Well you can save yourself some $$ by installing the headers yourself and buying the rest of your parts too.

I took all my parts to the shop with my headers on and they built my duals from the headers back out of mandrel bends and stainless steel tubing for a little over 900.

I was thinking about doing the header swap myself... Problem is, the swap is a little harder on a 4.7 then a 5.9. Building up my parts list over time and going to a shop with parts in tow may be easier on the wallet over time, and probably the smart way to go, since I am on a budget. Question - Did you buy your own cats, and what kind did you buy?

I hate paying people to do things I can pull off myself.... even if it takes me 10 times longer to accomplish.

I bought everything except the exhaust pipe, flanges, cats, mufflers, clamps, bungs...

The cats I got are magnaflow, but I'm not really happy with them. They only warranty them for 2 years from the date of purchase so you can almost count on them not passing an etest after that.... mine didn't

Well, since Magnaflows run in excess of $500 each, and I'll need more then 1, I'm back to paying someone else to do it - Cost the same with a fraction of the headaches!

I was looking online - Noyzboyz, Magnaflow etc... I found the cheaper ones on US websites... Where did you get yours?

I don't think I've seen an aftermarket cat that expensive anywhere ever

edit: I just looked at noyzboyz, I can't tell exactly what they are advertising for cats cause the pictures don't work, prices seem outrageous. Prices on everything else seem reasonable tho

I just bought universal 2.5" in/2.5"out cats

I'm begining to think I may be way ahead of the game by just springing for everything, and building my own system. Trick here will be getting someone who can weld (I can't), who has access to a tig welder and a lift! Spend $300 on a Flowmaster universal DIY kit, buy the mufflers, cats etc. and go to it!

I have been doing a little research, and I may have figured out why you failed your e-test. It's not as simple as swapping in a new cat - You have to make sure you have the right size, right number and right type! ie 2-way, 3-way, 3-way w/ air... The ones that are supposed to go my my truck are $520 direct from Magnaflow... I'm going to have to check out a few things, and of course talk to Magnaflow, but there may be a way to avoid the $500+ cats, and use less expensive ones - just have to use more of them!

Every car since the early 80's has 3 way cats.... they don't use 2way anymore

Also most vehicles (including our trucks) don't use an air injection system anymore either... they use a constantly varying A/F ratio to keep the catalysts oxygen balanced.

It pretty well is as simple as swapping in a new cat.. that's why they call them "universal"... get the proper inlet and outlet and the proper engine size rating and your good. The problem is OEM cats by law are warranted for 8 years, aftermarket cats don't have to meet that requirement... so they use cheaper materials and thus they don't last as long or work as well.

The $520 cats they are trying to sell you are probably direct OEM replacements... that doesn't mean in anyway that they will last longer than mine did. I'll bet if you ask them they will tell you they only come with a 2 year warranty.

Using more cats is just gonna cost you more money... they will still die far sooner than your OEM ones

Well, the main cats are easy enough... Going from 1 to 2, to accomodate the X-pipe system. Trick will be figuring out what cats to use as my pre-cats!

That I can't help you with.... most people delete them IIRC. You might try starting a new thread to ask, you'll get much more input... 90% of the board wouldn't even look in this thread to see your questions

Justin, thanks for the direct to A&A... They are by far and away the cheapest price, and I'll get what I want for way less than $2000, taxes in! And that includes doing my headers!

The 4.7 isn't going to be stock. No blower or turbo, there will be plenty to justify the exhaust size. Besides - Ford put a 2.25" true dual sytem on 5.0 and 4.6 SOHC Mustangs for years, and the first thing everyone does to those cars is swap in a bigger exhaust to free up power! If I was going to 3" or larger, I can see a problem...
