I understand it to be that the 4.7L Powertechs from 2002 on have a 32 tooth tone ring and prior to that they are using a 16 tooth tone ring. I also understand that it is possible to swap the tone rings. Aside from swapping, can you get your PCM flashed or get a new PCM to use a 32 tooth tone ring engine in a truck that originally came with a 16 tooth tone ring powertech? Thanks.

I hope this helps...

1999-2002 4.7L - Jtec PCMs (3-plug PCM) use a 16 tooth tone ring
2003-2007 4.7L - NGC PCM (4-Plug PCM) use a 32 tooth tone ring
2008-up 4.7L - Im not sure, they may still use the NGC 32 tooth tone ring.

Also the CAM tone ring goes hand in hand with the PCM as well...so you need to make sure your camshaft tone ring goes with the correct crankshaft tone ring with the correct PCM.

The transition was done in the 2003 year and you may find a Jtec in a 2003 year 4.7L... So double check the PCM to make sure what you have.

it may be possible, but you will prolly have to ask hemifever and see what he says since he deals with the programming on a daily basis.

it is a bit of work to change out the tone rings...but if you do change them dont forget about he ones on the passenger side cam

The advice to check the PCM is sound, but the transition was a little backwards. There are a handfull of 2002 Durangos that have the NGC (32tooth) where all the other 2002 models are still JTEC.

Just be aware of what you're getting.

I need more specific if you can, I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota 4.7l I’m doing head gaskets just have not removed the valve covers yet to look but my pcm has 4 ports in it but only three plugs the one port is empty. Is it a JTEC or ngc?

So, I have an 03' Dakota 4.7 that we tried to tune yesterday. No go. I'm assuming that I have the JTEC (early 03') and not the NGC (later 03'). What could I swap this out with to make it tunable without issues? Does it need to be from a Dakota or will one from an 03 Durango work too? Looking to pick one up from the junkyard, or aftermarket, if someone has the correct part number. We will be eliminating all O2 sensors and all emissions, so that won't be an issue. Anything else that I should know? Thanks in advance!

You have the NGC controller because JTEC was only on the 2000 to 2002 Dakota's, I doubt there were many JTEC Dakota's in 2003 and that would be right at the changeover to NGC from the 2002 to 2003 model year.
What tuner were you trying to use on your truck? There are certain brands that were only available to these trucks.

We were using HP Tuners but when we plugged it in, it came up as "No Buss" and no details came up on the screen.

That's a sign of a possible problem and I think it has been asked on here before you will have to search for "No BUS when plugged in tuner".
