What is the most effective upgrade to squeeze power outta the V6?

Im not looking to spend a whole lot...but whats the most cost effective?

I just have a K&N Filter in it right now :p

I'm just looking for a tad bit more power...if at all possible...without getting an engine swap.

I do...well my dad has a Mopar 340ci engine sitting on an engine stand right now...but hes not wanting to put that into my truck...yet haha...

its just sitting there because hes getting a 440 put into the 'cuda...

but yeah...thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction..

you want an F&B 48mm throttle body with a K&N FIPK
then exhaust when you have the $$

I am actually trying to sell my 48mm F&B throttle body. I have used it for about 1000 miles. Im selling it because i need a bigger one.

these throttle bodies run about $380 brand new!

id give it away for $300

ooooohhh put the 440 in there!

well if your looking for quick cheap power.. there is that item on ebay...(20+HP only 99Cents~!!) .....

not really.

to sum it up, power = money, and reverse.. a K&N FIPK kit will cost you 230.00 a good cat back will be 3-400, thoes are easiest then you can get into the 5.9 throttlebody, cams, gears money money MONEYY

so when i hear someone say they want power but dont want to spend a lot.. i think of sailing with out wind, peanutbutter with out jelly, or to get really corny - internal combustion with out fuel.

unless you you can talk pops into droppin that 440, that will give you your ticket(s).

So a 5.9L 360ci Throttle body would bolt right up without any modification?

then from there I can get a CAI...then cat-back exhaust kit...I was thinking Magnaflow.

that should give me a pretty good hp increase right?

There giving you pretty damn good advice Chapmen.
I've noticed very nice gains with a 48mm throttle body (don't go any bigger with a stock engine.) As always getting that engine breathing better is the first step (good intake and exhaust.) on improving a stock engine. If you search around here you'll find loads of info on Throttle bodys and cold air intakes. A cat back exhaust system should not be so early on your list as the stock 2 1/2" exhaust flow really well. If your wanting the sound just replace the stock muffler. Best bang for your buck in my book would be to install a set of Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rocker arms. Your can get a set direct from Harland Sharp for about $260.00 and there a pretty easy intall. Many people may disagree about other mods but I bet most will agree that 1.7 Roller rocker are a great on our v6's.

I tried looking for them...but couldnt find any :(

Must be poor searching on my part, but could you point me in the right direction...?

Installing a bigger TB, Cat-Back Exhaust, Intake and 1.7 roller rockers really show a pretty good improvement in this engine?

definately. superchip will also help unlock some extra ponies.

look on summitracing.com for the roller rockers. supposedly, john mercedes can get you a deal on a set, but i asked him on here and never got a reply. i found mine on ebay for cheap. they were only slightly used (only 1k miles). good luck and ask all the questions you want. someone will have the answer.

Johns a damn good guy. He runs a business besides being on here. If you want to contact him use the email or phone # he has posted in his advertisers section. I've even called the man and bothered him late at night and on Sundays.

Depending on your climate remove the clutch fan. Don't do this if you don't have the factory electric AC fan though. If you do it's a free mod and is noticeable. Don't spend the $$$ on the fipk. Just go to auto zone and get the $40 Honda one. Later on switch the filter out to a good filter. Leave the exhaust alone but swap out the muffler for a freeflowing one. Next is to put a V8 tb on. You will have to most likely buy the matching throttlecable for around $30 also. These are the cheapes bangs for the buck. If you do a little shopping you could do all the stuff I mentioned for around $200. Later on you can upgrade as you go.

I can get a Magnaflow Muffler w/ 2.5" Input, 2.5" single Output...Stainless Steel for like 50-60 bucks...

Should I just get that welded up to the stock existing system? or should I just pay the extra and get a cat-back system?

Also, I could just go to a junkyard and yank a V8 TB out of a Durango/dakota right? as long as it is a 5.2/5.9L ?

Im in NC...it gets hot...so removing the clutch fan wouldnt be too good of an idea...

I just have the factory airbox...with a K&N Filter thats like 2 weeks old...I also have chrome tubing for an intake..thats off a 94 Acura Legend though...I sold it. So if I can some how make my own intake..I might.

Superchips - I dont think they make an application for a V6.

Also, I replaced the sparks + Spark plug wires not too long ago. I did a huge tune up(Tranny and engine oil, brakes, serp. belt, etc.)

Also - off topic for a second...my V6 is bolted up to a V8 Transmission...any reason why?

I wouldn't pay for a cat-back....just buy the muffler you want and if you want to spend the extra money have the shop make you a new tail pipe...other wise just replace the mufller itself. But IMO you won't see very much gain from this

Yes any TB from a 5.2 or 5.9 will work, but like Moore said, you'll need a cable for it too. but I don't think you'll find one at a wreckers, I don't know what it's like there but up here the engines get taken out and sold whole, so I'm not sure if you could get just the TB, but you might. I think your best bet is to watch on all the dodge forums

The superchips 3715 works on 3.9, 5.2, 5.9 and sometimes 4.7 applications

The transmissions for the 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 are interchangable, the engines are almost identical

With us being the actual developers of these rockers along with 2 other styles since in 1998, summitt and Jeg's pricing will be pretty high as most the others since MAP pricing was introduced.

i may have a member we are building another 408 and think he mentioned having some 1.7 non adjust rockers. if you get with me, i will try to help you out with these since we will be using adjustables on the engine..

hey john, for some reason, i didnt think to e-mail you directly. i just posted a thread in your section about them. i ended up coming across a extremely good deal on ebay.

as for the superchips, i have been running one on my 2000 3.9 for about 2 years now. take a look at my signature for my mods to my 3.9.

also, i live in northeast georgia and i removed my clutch fan at the begining of summer and had no problems at all. even when i went to atlanta many times in that heat.

as for the tranny, if its an auto, then its a 42re. 5.2's and 5.9's came with 44re and 46re's.

So does your V6 have pretty good pick-up right now in its current state compared to stock?

Does the superchip really help? roller rockers? bigger TB?

also, How does that Flowmaster Super 40 sound on that V6? Good or bad?

edit: apparently though, I have V8 Tranny...I dunno...Im Confused...the guy at the auto parts place said I had a V8 tranny.

i have found that guys at parts stores dont know jack shit most of the time.

it has a good bit of pick up on the bottom end, but around 2500 rpm, it really comes alive. when i first bought my truck, it wouldnt even break the tires loose on wet pavement. keep in mind that my truck is a 4300 pound quad cab. now it will most definately break um loose wet or dry.

superchip made a very noticeable difference. i think that tomorrow i might reinstall the factory program to see how much of a difference it really makes. i have done a lot of mods since i got the superchip.

the rockers were probably the most noticeable mod so far. it really woke up my truck all across the board.

the tb was one of the first mods that i did. i think that i only had a cold air intake and the flowmaster done at that point. overall, i noticed a lot better throttle response. i lost a little bottom end, but i definately gained in the upper rpm's.

i personally like the way that my flowmaster sounds. it sounds nice and deep at idle and cruising. when i get on it, it has a little bit of a raspy sound, but it doesnt sound ricey to me. now it is a 40 series delta flow which sounds different than just a regular 40 series.

with all of the mods that i have on my heavy ass truck, i am averaging around 18-19 mpg around town and thats with the ocassional lead foot. i dont really do a lot of highway driving, but next week i am making a long trip so i will be sure to keep tabs on my mileage.

4.10 or 4.56s will be a difference, but heres a few others of my choice, good brass cap, rotor, wires, plugs, v8 tb, 1.7 RRs if you dont get a cam, headers, CAI, and i love my flow 40 too, and a set of 26.5" or close tires until you get a better rear gear then that 3.55, and yes the superchips do work, i loved mine. i said hell with the v6 and workin a v8 now. the shorter tires will make it seem like you have a tad lower gear, i used 245/60/15s and spin the one wheeler hard off the line at the track, it put my ratio around 3.90, search for a rear gear calculator to give you the the tire and gear equation.
