Can a NP242 transfer case from a Jeep Grand Cheorkee be swapped into a 88 5spd Dak long bed to replace the 231 part time case? With our winter road conditions, the constant shifting in and out of 4wd is a pita! Our old jeep had the 242 with the full time mode was much nicer being able to be in 4wd all winter with 2wd mode avaiable for the interstate running when it wasnt snow covered. I know the rear drive shaft will probably have to be shortened as that case has the internal diff for full time mode. I am more concerned about the input shaft spline and length. Anybody done this mod to thier Dak? I have a line on a low mileage case, where as this 231 has 221K on it, granted thats not all in 4wd mode. Thanks Mike

If I'm not mistaken, the Dakota's use a 21 spline input. You would need a 242 from 1987-1990 Cherokee. The later Cherokees and Grand Cherokees all have a 23 spline input.

I have a 242 in my 1988 Cherokee and I love it on snowy/icy roads.
