The plastic piece with the Ram's head logo is the outer surface of the airbag, so if you want to remove it from the steering wheel in order to paint it the whole airbag has to come out.venom said:I have a 1999 Dakota and Just painted My Gauge Bezel with Dupont Mirage Color Chanign paint so it changes form a deep purple ( color or my truck ) to a forrest green, and I want to paint the Rams head on the steering wheel the same. I want to know in order to take the center section of the steering wheel to I have to engage or disengage the Airbag in any way, Or will i be able to pull the plastic peice off, because i definetly dont want the thing blowing up in my face, Anyways tell me if anyone else has taken the steering wheel off and what they had to do.
Again thanks for all the help
Make sure you disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and let the truck sit for about 5 minutes before beginning to work on the airbag. There are two bolts on the back of the steering wheel (one on each side) that holds the airbag assembly in place, once the bolts are gone the airbag can be pulled away from the steering wheel. There are two wires which are attached to the airbag, gently unclip them as you pull the airbag out.
