Has any one out there had a 3.9 L that when it drops below freezing and the truck has sat over nightthe starter whines and refuses to engage on first try , but starts on the second and continues to start all day untill it sits again over night. Wade

The starter gear that engages the flexplate/flywheel is driven forward on its shaft by a spring-loaded lever that is usually actuated by a solenoid. If it's starting to not engage, there's not much else to do but replace it as it will only get worse and will eventually stop working altogether.

You might be able to get away short term with lubricating the mechanism, but you'll probably have to remove the starter to do that and if it's off, you might as well replace it.
