So I am soon to start a 4.7 to 5.7 hemi swap...my 2003 4.7 is close to 200,000 miles so I want to start planning out my swap just in case my engine takes a crap..knock on wood though. So I am looking for knowledge of anyone who has worked with this material before. So first off what year hemi works best and out of what vehicle should I get the 5.7 out of? Secondly will my 03 4.7 tranny fit directly to the 5.7 or will I have to make changes
or get a new tranny? Thirdly what new wiring, wiring harnesses, etc will I have to get? I already know that I will have to fab up a new oil pan and that is no problem. I have probably left out much info so please feel free to bring it up. Thank you everyone for your help.

i would go with a 2005 or newer Hemi. What trans do you have and are you 2wd or 4wd? Get the engine harness and PCM as a minimum. If you can get the engine bay harness and DBW pedal that would be a good idea.

Why not a 2005 and up 4.7L. Has higher compression better intake and a 90% bolt up? with the pcm from that veh. with less money$$. god bless. and good luck!

Have you priced 4.7s ? They are outrageous!

I can't even find 4.7s anywhere local to me. I was trying to get one for a parts for my Dakota and no luck. The 4.7s you do find are around 2500 for just the block. Once my 4.7 goes I am either going to do a Hemi swap or go diesel.

Good luck with your build.

What I seen for 5.7 Hemi's from the LX models average about 1500. I believe there are for the most part the same ... a few differences... but from the short block it should be the same. I do know the 05 and above LX 5.7 hemi's were more stout internally.

Example earlier this month there was for sale...

28k mile 5.7 engine and transmission $2100
I have a complete running 5.7 Hemi, and Transmission from a 2008 R/T Road and Track. This is a 28k mile running engine that is in EXCELLENT shape, It includes all accessories, belt, injectors, fuel rails, intake, throttle body, oil pan, coil packs, valve covers, exhaust manifolds and more. Engine has been maintaned by local dealer, in perfect condition. Includes engine cover and air box as well. Also included is the NAG1 transmission
Item is located in Kansas City, MO but can ship if neeed (preferance given for local pu)
Engine and trans $2100
Engine only $1650
Trans Only $700 with converter

or

Complete short block **NOT ASSEMBLED**
Heres the details and whats invested........
-5.7 block bored for custom pistons $175 in machine work
-Ross oversized 8:1 compression -10cc dome (3 have pits and dings from VENDOR X Pos head that fell apart) Initial cost $1350 (additional pistons can be bought for 108 per piston from ross, they have a serial number.
-New total seal ring set for Boost and N20 $280
-Howard billet 4340 rods $995
-6.1 crank $350
-cleveite 77 H series main and rod bearings $225
-ARP main studs $150
-New cam bearings -$55
Roughly 3500 in parts "GOOD PARTS" no BS, Only thing needed to the block is to be line honed, and assembled. Heres a chance for someone to pick up a good foundation for a bad ass forged short block for cheap. Asking price is set at....$1500 any offers will be entertained.

So you can look around at getting a LX\LC Hemi engine and make some modifications.

I know if I have to mod my 5.7 Hemi I will be adding the parts from the LX side of the Hemi house.

OK for a 4.7 to hemi swap in a 2003
you will need
5.7 Hemi from a dodge ram 1500 perferably a 03 or 04 as it wont be a MDS engine
Mopar performance cable actuated TB (You will not be drive by wire)
SCT tuner from hemi fever
Data logger with wideband
Custom AC lines
You may have to fab the engine mounts
Custom fabbed oil pan

As for wiring
You will need to extend or shorten some wires to keep things looking clean. You will also need to change a few connectors on the harness to work with the Hemi sensors.

YOU will NOT need to rewire the truck!!

As for the transmission you have the 545RFE trans which is the same trans that the hemi's use. If I were you with the miles that are on your engine and trans I would buy a low mileage engine and trans combo from a 2wd ram. That way you have a fresher trans. If not you can use the trans that you have but I feel as though you may be on borrowed time with it.

So with the items listed above you will ned to fabricate some parts but once that has been done its just about a plug and play as you can get. This type of swap will only work with the 2003 or newer trucks because the Hemi uses a 32 tooth tone wheel. Same as the 03-newer 4.7's also the computer is a NGC controller basically the same as the Hemi. Once you have the engine in and running you will need to make some datalogs for Hemifever so he can dial in your A/F and timing.

For the 03 or newer 4.7L trucks its alot like the mustang guys do with the 4.6-5.4 swap.

Ill try to help answer any questions I can. Josh (HemiDak) and I have poored over all the information I have gathered on this swap for my own 2003 and everything say it will work. I know of some ram guys that have swapped from the 4.7 to the Hemi and had no issues. Im still in the parts procurment stage for my swap but mine will have more of a twist to it.

i'm sure your well aware its alot of work performing a engine swap. Are u gonna do it yourself or pay someone else? Check out hemidak thread or go in his profile and review his treads. I'd imagine u find alot of info in one place.
