I have a 1988 Dakota and would like to retrofit a 1990 instrument cluster with tach. Has anyone been able to do this switch successfully in an '88? Do the wires in the plug-ins need to be re-arranged? Is an adapter needed to run the tach? So far, my attempts have met with confusion...

I am actually trying to address the lack of tachometer issue on my 87' dakota. Does the trucks computer actually have a tachometer pin that's not used? Can I run a signal wire? I would like to have an oem tachometer; call me crazy. I have done these plug and play tachometer upgrades on some of six dakotas I have owned over the years.

Grab the entire cluster and just plug it in nothing else needs to be done! I've preformed this on all my pre 90 dakotas with the useless big fuel gauges!
