2006 Dakota SLT 4.7L with 127k miles (transfer case is marked model 233 D)

My transfer case has a slow leak and I think I've finally gotten a good enough look to pinpoint the source of the leak.

  1. Is this the seal between the transfer case and the rear retainer?
  2. How difficult is this to replace (and does it require removing the transfer case entirely)? (Wishful thinking, I know)
  3. Is it possible that this leak indicates some other problem (e.g. vents clogged)?

Disclaimer: this is my first experience with a transfer case, so I'm not super familiar with the workings/terminology. I have a copy of the factory service manual, and it sounds like the seal here is just a 3mm bead of gasket maker.

If the transfer case needs to be removed, I'm probably going to end up taking this to a shop or dealer (I don't have a transmission jack :)).

Thanks for any insights and advice!

Given the leak is very slow, I think I'm just going to monitor the fluid level and top it off as needed. I haven't had any drips in the last few days (although there is a thin layer of ATF still on the transfer case).
