i need some advice. for about a year now. my 2000 dakota 2WD has been making a very strange noise coming from the rear end. It only happens when i turn corners at slow speeds and with the steering wheel turned 1/2 to full rotation.

it is the 8.25" 10-bolt LSD. w/ 3.55 gears

now my question is.

there is a local scrap dealer who has the 12 bolt axel assembly with 3.92 running gear and i believe disc brakes. he wants $800. but, he told me it was off a 4x4.

is there any difference?

how much heavier is this axel?

how much stronger is this axel?

Will it bolt on with no problems?

for those of you that are unaware, i am starting an engine build and plan on putting at least 300hp to the wheels. so i need an axel that can take it.

Is it like a groaning noise? If so, Try putting some additive for lsd differentials in, if the lsd diff doesnt have any in there, its gonna be making strange noises while turnin because thats when the lsd is doin its job. My rearend was making the same noise, i just completly changed my fluids including the additive. I doubt you'll be needing a whole new rearend.

If it's from a 4x4, it won't bolt right up. 4x Dakotas have spring over, 2wd has spring under.
right but can't i just bolt it on over my springs? like this is a pretty common thing to do if you want to lowerer your 4x4. if i still keep the original blocks and u-bolt, i should be able to use a 4x4 axel. I cant see why chrysler would make 2 different 9.25" axels.

Personally I would fix the 8.25. Pull the rear cover off and drain the fluid, check to see if chunks of your posi clutches are falling apart, or excessive wear on the gear teeth, this has happened to me before. If everything is fine then just refill it and add posi additive.

The axle itself would be the same, internals etc. However, the spring and shock mounts are welded onto the housing in different locations.

Like I said, it won't just bolt up. If you found a deal on a good 4x axle, it wouldn't take a whole lot of work to make it work with your 2wd truck, given that you have the right tools and knowledge...
