I've always wondered what those little clear plastic spike things on headlight lenses are for? Why don't they just make the lense smooth? Are they remnants of the molding process the manufacturer never bothered to take off? I've seen them on other makes/models too, so I'm at a loss and searching hasn't helped. Anyone know?

I believe they are for when you lay them down. Acts like feet so you don't mess up the lense for assembly and maintenance.

You don't need that. All you need is a T20 torx driver. There's an adjustment bolt above each headlight, if your lights are too low, give 'em a few cranks clockwise, too high, counter-clockwise. Go for a drive and see how it looks, repeat if necessary. I usually pull up to the garage door to make sure they're even too.
