[HOW-TO][Engine - 4.7] Changing the Spark Plugs

This how-to outlines the steps for replacing the spark plugs on a 4.7L engine. It is especially geared toward anyone having problems with the tricky #8 plug.

Tools Required:

  • 3/8” Ratchet
  • 10mm Socket
  • 5/8” Spark Plug Socket
  • Swivel Adapter
  • 3” Extension
  • 10” Extension
  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Spark Plug Gapper

Procedure:

1. To remove the Air Hat, unscrew these two screws with a Flat Head Screwdriver.

2. Remove the 10mm bolts under the Air Hat and the wire harness.

3. Remove the Air Hat, then unclip the heater line.

4. Remove the wire harness and the 10mm nut holding down the coil pack.

5. Lift up and remove the coil pack. Use a 5/8” Spark Plug socket to remove Spark Plug.

6. Gap Spark Plugs at .040 with a Gaper. Place new Spark Plug on the socket and replace

7. Install Coil Pack, replace 10mm nut to coil pack and connect wire harness.

8. Process is the same for Spark Plugs numbers 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7.

9. Remove the 10mm bolt to the heater clip above Spark Plug number 3, then repeat steps 4-7.

10. Reinstall heater clip with 10mm bolt.

The following steps are specific to the #8 plug:

11. Remove the 10mm nut on Spark Plug number 8 by using a: 10mm Socket, Swivel Adapter, 10” Extension, 3/8” Ratchet.

12. Remove the wire harness.

13. Carefully remove the Coil Pack.

14. Remove the Spark Plug using the following: Spark Plug Socket, 3” Extension, Swivel Adapter, 10” Extension, 3/8” Ratchet.

15. Place new Spark Plug in the Spark Plug Socket and replace into head.

16. Carefully insert the Coil Pack onto the Spark Plug and install 10mm nut. Replace wire harness to Coil Pack.

17. Clip the three heater clips to the hardline.

18. Replace the Air Hat. Connect the wire harness and the 10mm bolts.
