How To: Bypass Stock Amp

A couple of people have contacted me about how to do this. The harnesses used are Metra 70-8901. They are for 1990-2006 Subaru vehicles and you will need 2 of them. They can be found on eBay or Amazon for around $10/each. They will look like this:

First, take your connectors and label one A and the other one B. This will help ease wiring. The connectors should have the pin numbers labelled on the connector. The chart below will help you connect them together. If you want to keep the number of wires down remove all the unnecessary wires. Note This will work for 1999 models. Don't know about other years.

Connector A-----------------------------Connector B
Pin 1---Remove
Pin 2---Remove
Pin 3---Remove
Pin 4---Violet---------------------------Pin 8---Gray w/BLK
Pin 5---Green---------------------------Pin 12---Violet w/BLK
Pin 6---Yellow--------------------------Pin 10---Red
Pin 7---Remove
Pin 8---Remove
Pin 9---Remove
Pin 10---Red-----------------------------Pin 3---White
Pin 11---Black----------------------------Pin 9---White w/BLK
Pin 12---Violet w/BLK---------------------Pin 2---Gray
Pin 13---Green w/BLK---------------------Pin 4---Violet
Pin 14---Blue-----------------------------Pin 11---Black

That should leave you with something looking like this:

Before you can put the connector you will need to shave a little bit off the middle dividers in the middle of the plugs. They should look like the picture below.

The stock amp is located in the passenger kick panel. It should just be clipped on. Remove that panel. You will see the amp tucked up there. Remove the 2 connectors going into it.

Now plug connection A into the larger connector and plug connection B into the smaller connector. Now put the kick panel on. Now you should have effectively bypassed the stock amp.

A special thanks to Boomin5POINT9 for helping me out with this.

Need some help hardwiring bypass

I have a 2003 Dakota with the infinity amp, it's causing a lot of problems, I want to bypass but with so many replies in this thread getting a bit confused so I was looking for some help to just hardwire the bypass without using the two harness solution, is this possible? What colours on the two harness' attached to the amp need to be connected?

If not could I get some detailed instructions on how to do it for the 2003 Dakota w/Infinity amp and which Metra harness' I would need
Just did this to my 2000 (used post number 1) and it worked perfectly. Pushing 44 watts RMS to all four corners now. You don't even have to pull the amp, just unplug, plug the harnesses in, then about 15 minutes to put your headunit in, and done.
Firstly if the incorporated system is anything like that of chevys around the same time frame a eprom checksom is used in conjunction with the antitheft system. This disables the radio and amp and triggers the antitheft system when the amp or radio has been removed. In doing so you can no longer start the vehicle. If that's the not the case the question was how to bypass the amp.... That's exactly what this post describe... Nice post though. SMDH
You only need to do this if you want to replace the stock HU AND speakers with aftermarket and use the built in amp instead of the stock infinity and retain factory speaker wiring. If you rewire the speakers directly to the HU then this isn't needed or if you have an aftermarket amp, then this is completely irrelevant.

If you have the infinity system and don't plan on replacing the speakers, but only the HU then you would want to continue to use the stock infinity amp because of the impedance difference of the stock speakers. Hence you wouldn't need to perform this bypass procedure.

Good write up though!
Why?

So i guess this would be nice if you were evefr going to hook up another amp that fits exactly in the same place and uses the same wire harness..... or you could just bypass without the harness with butt-splices and caps using this wiring diagram works for 98-00 durango with six speaker infinity sound system and prolly the dakota as well

cost 3 bucks and takes 10 mins
Nothing there
If yall want we can make these for you $25 + shipping. We have a crap ton of thoes plugs and when we do it we changed all the wires to green, white, grey, purple, Red, Black so when you go to wire up a 4 channel amp you dont have to pin try to find out what is what. You can just shoot me a msg on here if you would like one.

PS this works on the 2001 durango as well.
Hi,
Do you still make these amp bypass harnesses for the Durango / Dakota trucks? If so, i would like to buy one. Thanks, Mike
This worked perfect for my 02 Dakota. Saved a lot of time not having to ID and connect all the wires while hunched under the dash. Previously I was getting distortion and crackling when turning the volume up. Now it sounds so much better and can get so much louder with the Rockville HU, JL Audio C1s in the doors with a kicker 200.2 and 2 Fosgate 10s in a box with a kicker 800.2.

I'm glad it worked out for you. I made the cable and now the amp is physically removed from my 97 Dakota Sport. I am replacing all front and rear speakers, and replacing the HU with a new JVC that will give me USB input and an external audio in, something I was sorely missing with the factory unit. It is still a work in progress, but I'm hoping to finish the job today and i can start enjoying the fruits of my labor. I love being able to plug in a pen drive and listen to thousands of my favorite artists. I doubt I will even bother with the CD player.

I've only changed my HU and my stock speakers are still wired up, yet I still get no sound. I'm trying to figure out how to bypass the harness but you say I shouldn't need to. How do I go about fixing this problem than? I know my wiring is correct cause I've spent a lot of time figuring out what is what for this truck.

Anybody still around on this 12 yrs later? I installed a new HU and get no volume.. im thinking this amp is the culprit. I replaced the speakers years ago.
