2000 Durango with 5.2lt. The durango was sitting over night, so I went out and popped the hood to check things on the engine. I went to turn the fan, but it took a little effort. Aren't they suppose to free spin pretty much unless the temp goes up?

With the engine off (duh) give the fan a hard spin with your hand. It shouldn't even spin one time around. If it spins more than a couple of times the clutch is no good. If the fan blade has any wobble in it, the clutch would also be bad (unless the fan-to-clutch mounting bolts are loose).

In 00 the 4.7 was 4x4 only. The 2wd remained with the 5.2.

How did we got on the electric fan? You have two fans. One is engine driven with clutch and the second is a thermostatically controlled electric fan. Which one are you turning?
