OK, problem number 2 on the new (free!) Durango. Get a grinding noise that starts at around 15 MPH and gets worse as the car goes faster. Don't think its a transmission problem as the noise is independent of the RPM's. I am guessing wheel bearings. Anyone have experience with this. Tranny shifts nice and smooth and that engine has a whole lot of power!

Also, it only happens when the car is driven in a straight line. Stops when I make a turn.

I am pretty sure that the front wheel bearings are your problem. Like when mine went out I only heard the grinding noise when i turned my wheel when going 10+mph.

Also do not buy a cheap wheel bearing or else you will have the same problem again a month later. I found that out the hard way. lol

I just lost my right front at 150k - started out an intermittent but steady rumbling noise over 70 mph. Kept hearing it at lower & lower mph's.

Suspected wheel bearings, jacked the front wheels off the ground a bit and sure enuf the right one had a little play in it when pushing in / out at the top of the wheel.

When I got it out, very easy to tell when rotating it by hand.

Yep, that was it. Right wheel hub was bad. Apparently, or at least what the shop told me, is that the entire hub assembly has to be replaced. Does that sound correct? Going to get the left one done as well.
