I'm sure this gets brought up a lot but I need some advice. I have a 2000 dakota 4.7. I'm going to be putting a cold air intake on in about a week or so. What I want in an exhaust is a clean crisp sound. I don't want gargling and popping or sound like a ricer on the top end. I will probably put a magnaflow high flow cat on. I would like to boost some mpgs. Another question is should I do a cat back and go to 3 inch? Or leave it at whatever it is? My buddy has a gibson on his 4.7 tundra and I really like the sound of that. Quiet but noticeable at an idol. And head turner when you get on it but not loud in the cab. Am I being too picky? Any advice would help. Thanks

I had a 40 series on a toyota pickup I had. I liked the idol but didn't care for the top end sound and the popping. Maybe because it was a v6. I'm kind of leaning towards a magnaflow but not sure

Yeah V6's sound like shit with exhaust. Only inline 6 cylinder motors sound good (IE Supra/Skylines) . Have heard gibson before on a 5.9 and it does not crackle or backfire like a flowmaster. Magnaflow mufflers sound nice too. I have a thrush racing chambered muffler currently and it sounds pretty good and was very cheap from summit.com, under 50 bucks.

Thanks for the info guys. I love the rumble of my 5.9, and would like to hear a bit more of it without going too loud while I'm driving. Mostly I just want to turn up the volume on that beautiful sound while idling and at low speed. It looks like a Magnaflow is the way to go. I just had the passenger side cat replaced last summer. Would you kind folks have any other recommendations?

Magnaflow is the best option as their direct fit cat systems and cat-back systems are fully stainless steel and mandrel bent. I noticed my fuel economy went up a little after I replaced the custom compression bent system that had rusted out. I also had to replace the headers as well but IDK if you are considering headers as well but if you are, I would go ahead and get headers done at the same time when you replace the exhaust system.

Thank you. I'm thinking about doing the whole exhaust system, but that won't be for a bit. I will need a muffler soon though. I've been watching videos with before and after audio. I definitely like the Magnaflow sound better than the Flowmaster.
