Emissions change

Here in Ontario, they are changing the way they check emissions. They are phasing out the dyno/pipe sniff and moving to a system where they plug into your diagnostic port and read your numbers based on what the computer and O2 sensors read. They are saying by doing this, they will register a fail if you are at 1.5 times the manufacturer's specs as far as pollution numbers go (NOX, CO etc.) as opposed to the pipe sniff, which registers a fail at 4x the manufacturer's specs. What I'm worried about is how will this affect people with mods? I can (and will) return my PCM to stock with the SCT before testing, but I have some extras that I'm not so sure about... H/O cams being the biggest worry. All my pollution controls are properly hooked up and functional... Is there anything to worry about??

Yeah except that's a load of shit. There is no sensor in the emissions system that can detect the levels of NOx/HC/CO2. All they have to go on is the upstream O2 sensor, which can only tell them if the mix is correct, and the downstream O2 sensor which tells them whether or not the cat is working.

All the OBD based inspections do is check to ensure there are no active P codes, the CEL is working, and all monitored systems are in a "Ready" state. You've got nothing to worry about. They did OBD inspections when I lived in NJ and I passed even with a bad upstream O2 (failed silently, no code - engine just ran rich).
When is this supposed to take effect?
January 1, 2013. 1988-1997 (I think it's 1997) vehicles will have a 2-speed idle/sniff test. 1998-2005 (7-year exemption moving window) get the OBD-II plug in test.

Ok, fair enough. I'm still taking the SCT tuning out a couple of weeks before testing, and running good ol' 87 octane through her. I'm not thrilled with having government mandated checks into my truck's computer. Rather have a good old fashioned sniff test and be done with it. What comes out the back is what's important, isn't it?
Hey, y'all up there love your socialist government that much, thats what a socialist government does.. :stirthepo
Not all of us. Not by a long shot. I believe in gun ownership, user fees not over-taxation and private enterprise. Free health care isn't. Government should only be responsible for defense, emergency services and infrastructure. "Trudeaumania" has destroyed this country.

This.
God damn it, this new system of checking emissions is rubbish
Good morning... If the MTO is doing it the way Taz says, I'm not too worried. Just don't like the government plugging in to my truck. To my way of thinking, it's like they are plugging in to my BlackBerry or my home computer.
They been doing it that way here in Wisconsin for a while now. I even forgot to remove my superchips tune last time and still passed. Unless you're throwing a code you'll pass.
Good to know, thanks
They do it the same way in Mass. too. Just plug in and you're done.

No problems.
In NC all 1996 and newer get smogged and safety in most counties through the OBDII port. The rest is 1973-1995 get the sniffer, safety, and visual. 1996 and newer get OBDII and safety. The latter is in the metro areas...Raleigh, Charolette, Durham, ect. In Ga, only the metro areas do smog. In the rual counties, there is no smog, safety, or visual inspections. And Ill tell you what, there are some vehicles on the road here that really need to be scrapped.
UPDATE - I got tested today, and passed easily. I took the SCT tuning out a long time ago (save money on fuel by not using 94 octane) and rebooted the PCM a good month before the test. Need to have several drive cycles completed (30 on these trucks?) after a reboot to make sure everything is in "ready" mode.
Whole thing took 5 minutes, and to be honest, was a total crock of shit!
would not electric wires be easier to tap in an and mod. than a tail pipe?
