I bought a 02 Dakota with the 4.7L engine which it's suppose to have but the guy I bought it from said the engine that's in it isn't the original and it came out of a "car" I'm thinking he swapped the original dodge 4.7L with a Jeep 4.7L HO out of a grand Cherokee. I'm looking for pictures if the differences in the engines down to the most littlest detail. I've noticed fuel lines not secured evap canister floating under the battery those two are just two out of mini things I found wrong or out of place. Does anybody know where the numbers are on the block to see if it is in fact a 4.7 L?

I don't have the spot to look for the Jeep 4.7 HO but the heads, intake manifold, and there will be a sensor on the side of the engine block for the knock sensor that will tell you it is a Jeep 4.7 Ho.
Beyond that, the tone wheels will tell you it is for the JTEC engines, which the Jeep 4.7HO runs on, and it not compatible with the NGC PCM's.

Slight corrections: there are 2 knock sensors on an HO, they are located in the top of the block, 1 on RH bank and 1 on LH bank, under the intake manifold (difficult to see when intake manifold is installed. The early HO's used a 16T tone wheel (for JTEC PCM(3 plug)) and later models used a 32T for NGC PCM(4plug) and again not easily seen when assembled. The tone wheel can be viewed (a tiny portion) by removing the crank sensor at rear side of engine block, you could then mark a tooth, have someone turn engine by hand and count the teeth till you see your marked tooth.

The only visible clue from outside is the cast in "H.O." characters on the intake side of the cylinder heads. The intake manifold can be another sign if it has not been changed.
Yes the heads will be embossed with the letters HO on each head at the front of the engine.
The Jeep 4.7s used JTEC through 2004. Dakota 4.7s went to NGC starting in 2003. Durango 4.7s went to NGC mid-year 2002.
