doing a clutch job on my 97 dakota with a 5.2 V8. i just got this vehicle recently and got to the point where i’m removing the bell housing bolts and the oil filter seems to be blocking one bolt. i haven’t tried un bolting it yet. does anyone know if i have to drain the oil then unscrew the oil filter? or does it snake by?

Since this reply is a couple of days later, you likely figured it out. It has been several years since I last removed my trans, I don't recall having to remove the oil filter. I could be wrong though. You will not need to drain the oil if you have to remove the filter.
