What are the differences or the changes that Dodge made to the Dakota since its introduction of the GENIII in 97? I notice that most aftermarket parts dont include my model year.

It really depends on what kind of aftermarket parts you are talking about. I mean, if you are talking performance parts... I know they changed the computer from 97 to 98, or something like that.

As far as part manufacturers, they don't know sh!t from shionola(sp?) when it comes to what years things are. Usually if it is some sort of cosmetic mod, like a front bumper cover, you will have no problem putting that on your 1997.

Give us more details on what type of parts you are speaking of, and then we will be able to better answer your question.

an example would be suspension. I want to get a mild lift for it even though it's a 2wd I would like a little more ground clearance. The Fabtech kit doesnt include my model year.

what years are they including?? most Gen III stuff is pretty interchangeable suspension wise.

when it comes to engine parts it gets the SMOG Nazis in a pickle cuz the codes only go up to certain years on certain parts and the ECM after `00 was changed by Ma MOPAR.

What about small changes to appearance or actual hardware? Didnt they throw a different bumper on our trucks at a certain point/model year? Also do you guys know how to disect my Vin# allowing me to determine what stock options my truck came with? Thank you to all for the help.

none really...bout the only way to tell the years of a Gen III is by the color(even that can be iffy as some colors carried for two or three years and the option package.. :cussing: )

Yeah, I know I have the SLT model but there are also other details you can get from the VIN#. For example when you go to the dealer and buy a new vehicle you can choose from a list of optional packages etc. I think the previous owner installed what looks like a mini radiator and placed it right over the large stock radiator. The way it was done looks like OEM. What stock options did Dodge offer on our trucks in 1997?

I'd be willing to bet that that smaller radiator is either a tranny cooler... or an A/C condencer. I know my truck has your normal radiator, and then a smaller a/c condencer directly in front of it. My then again, my fathers durango has a tranny cooler that came with his towing package from the factory.

Sometimes the vin number doesn't tell it all. I mean, if you had access to the chrysler database for all vin numbers, then yes,... but whether or not you have a towing package, and dark grey seats will now show up on your vin number.

There are a few difference between bumpers and years. The biggest year was between 2000 and 2001. Dodge changed the whole look on the interior of the truck, like the dash, and door panels. They also went to a one piece bumper up front.

2000 and older came with a two piece bumper,.. even if you got the "sport" model. If you got an SLT, you got a two piece bumper as well... no matter the year. If you said you have an SLT, you can't change much,... unless of cource you just get a complete bumper cover, in which case you just cover over the chrome bumper.

I went to the dealer and he printed out all options installed on truck ( radio, seats, paint, type of steering wheel, mirrors, decals, etc.) it was a two pages printout that showed all on the truck from factory - it was worth the trip. I do know when most professional trans shops (aamco) rebuils transmissions, they almost always add a cooler on the front. That might be what you have.
