Brake pedal issue

760 Views 3 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  RalphP
So I have an 02 Durango 4.7L 4x4 with RWABS. Not long ago, I was driving and the brake pedal went all the way to the floor when I pressed it normally, however I noticed that pressing it fast caused there to be some real pressure and the brakes then engaged.

I've checked for fluid leaks around the wheels and found nothing. The MC has fluid in it and there are no visible leaks in that vicinity. I can't necessarily hear any indication of a vacuum leak (not always audible), but nothing I could hear. I'm essentially just looking for a list of possible causes so I can start troubleshooting easiest and cheapest to hardest and most expensive. Thoughts?

This is a classic failure of the master cylinder, leaking from one 1/2 of the system to the other. Replace or rebuild the master cylinder.

Internal master cylinder leak.

I'll add that this failure mode usually includes brake fluid leaking into the booster; replace that also for safety and for your cousin and mine, Justin Case.
