Hey guys,

was looking for some info and stumbled upon this site....

a friend of mine and I have been working on changing the head gaskets on his 88 dakota. Took the heads off and had them gone over at the shop to make sure they were ok to put back on.

Got everything put back together and started it up. There is now a tapping sound coming from the pass side head and white smoke is coming out of the tailpipe. There was still coolant in the oil and we have drained/replaced the oil twice now.

the side the tapping sound is coming from is the opposite side of the blown head gasket if that makes any difference.

any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

It sounds like your heads or block got slightly warped when the conditions existed to pop the gaskets, and maybe even some valvetrain damage. You will probably need to have everything pulled and checked to see if it has to be decked.

did you torque the heads down properly? not doing so could have messed up the gasket seat and cause it to leak. also not torquing down the rocker arms properly could cause the tapping noise. hope this helps :biggthump
