So I'm trying to help a guy at work get his 87 Dakota back running. I keep trying to get him to send pictures of the problem. He says it won't run because the belt, I'm thinking V-belt he keeps calling it timing belt, keeps falling off. He thinks the pulleys are out of alignment. I have not seen any pictures of the truck, but I'm thinking the tensioner is failing and the belt is too loose. I know it's not much to go on, but thoughts?

No tensioner on a 1987 accessory drive.

Is it V6 or I4?

If V6, the layout is identical to my 1988; he's got to properly tighten the belts, and get the right belt on the right groove of the four.

Yes, four Vbelts on our stone age V6's.

Ok thanks, I don't know about older Dakota. I think he said it's a V6, but he wasn't sure.
He wasn't sure ...

Dude, tell him to step away from the truck and let someone who can count above 4 or recognizes the difference between a V and an I work on the truck.

But to help a small bit ... Here's a picture of the non-AC belt run. For A/C, the idler is replaced with an A/C compressor.
