I am in the process of purchasing R/T wheels for my 04 Dakota Quad Cab. It is a factory height. I was wondering if anyone else is running r/t wheels and what tire size they have? The stock tire size for r/t's will look silly on a 4x4 so I was wondering how big of a tire you can put on without lifting the truck or rubbing wheel wells/frame rail?

Thanks.

Pictures are always a bonus as well.

They should fit or will fit? Have you ever put 31s or 32s on 17's before? I should also add that most of my driving will be on hard surfaces, not on back woods trails. I do want a little bit of aggressive looking tire though.

R/T rims look kind of goofy on 4x4's, not to mention due to rim size you're looking at a substantial increase in price, since you'll be looking at a tire with a fairly low profile. 255/55R17 would be the ideal size. Anything taller than 32" you'll get rubbing.

255/55 is the stock tire size for the r/t. There would be a ton of room if I ran that size. I like the look of the r/t rim. Just looking for someone who runs them and what tire size they have. Thanks for the input.

31s will be the same size no matter what size rim you have. If you have stock 31x10.5R15 a 31x10.5R17 will be the exact same size tire. A 255/70R17 would work out to be a 31x10 which would be slightly narrower than your stock tire and a 265/65R17 would be a 31x10.4 which is very close to your a stock 31x10.5R15. Any of those 3 choices will keep the same amount of space as stock in your wheel well as well as keep your speedometer accurate.

get the 17s, get some nice all terrain 31/10/17s and you will be happy.

255s will look like crap and tinny under a stock height truck.

you cant also go off durango r/ts. i believe they have a similar height as a 4x4 dakota... they run 265/60/17 and i love the size on my rango. if i had a truck i would go a little bigger. maybe a 285.

I'll have to look into the torsion bar idea. Don't know much about that.

Thanks again.

how did you do the math? because all the tire calculators come out at 33.8.. i knew that sounded a bit big
255/55/17 example
255mm = 10.0394" x .55 = 5.52167 x 2 = 11.04334 + 17 = 28.04334"

Section width/aspect ratio-rim size --> 285/70-17

285 x .7 = 199.5

199.5 x 2 (two sidewalls) = 399

399 / 25.4 (convert to inch) = 15.7"

15.7 + 17 = 32.7

285/75 is 33.8.

I run BFG A/Ts on Pro comp 17x9s. 285/70r17s rub at full lock on the frame.
You can't just say 285/75 is 33.8. Section width, aspect ratio and wheel size all factor in overall diameter for metric sizing. Assuming a 17" wheel like we're talking here, however, is correct as I'm sure you know.
