Anyone on here know a way at home to check the health of an alternator?

My '91 sometimes has trouble starting on the first try, then when it does start I notice the volt meter on the guages reading low (~10 V) for awhile then all of a sudden (usually after reving it a bit) picks up to normal. It is fine after that. The alternator is my first suspect.

The only test I've seen on other sites are just load tests where you start the truck, take a voltage reading then start adding loads (like headlights, etc) and watch for any voltage drops. The voltage should stay the same.

Thanks

If you have a Advance Auto or Auto Zone near by they can test it for free

If you have a multi meter like a Fluke then you can check it out if not then you need to take the truck to someone that has the tools. Just about any parts joint can run a load test for you.
