I am currently in process of stripping / repainting my truck before spring.

My paint / body guy was concerned about my factory fenders, due to the interior rust, and said it would be best for me to replace them, instead of continuing to fight the ongoing rust.

He did suggest that I go with OEM fenders, not aftermarket, due to fitment, and troubles I could have with holes / studs in wrong locations.

OEM fenders retail around $600. He can get them for me for about $300.
I would really hate to dump $600 into front fenders and find that aftermarket fenders fit just fine.

Has anyone had any experience with aftermarket replacement fenders?

If so, how did they fit? How is the steel? Any issues with installing parts, brackets, ect..?

Any suggestions on where to buy from?
Any suggestions on where to get OEM cheaper?

Sorry for all the questions, just trying not to tie up a a lot of money into fenders.

I'm not sure if this will help but I found a website http://www.lmctruck.com I bought my new hood and front grille off of there. I'm not sure how they will fit as I have not received them yet. I'll let you know when I get them on there. They're supposed to bolt right up to the original fittings. So hopefully they do

I'm not sure if my body guy has had bad experiences with aftermarket body panels, but he would like me to steer clear from aftermarket panels. Maybe it's the sheet metal itself, or the unreliability.

I figured it was fitting, may just have to have him order the OEM fenders.

Let me know how that hood fits, I will be very curious.

I have had some experience with aftermarket fenders but not on a Dakota.

Good Experience:
My ex had a Honda Civic and banged up the front fender. A local junkyard ordered a new aftermarket one for around $90. When I went to put it on, it fit just like the original and had no fitment issues at all.

Bad Experience:
When my friends ranger got hit, we got a new aftermarket fender on it. First off, only half the holes lined up. Then when the front part of the fender was lined up, the rear was out of alignment and vice versa. The fit was extremely horrible. He got 3 new aftermarket fenders and not a single one fit correctly. He finally broke down and bought a factory one. It was 3 times the price but lined up perfectly.

Aftermarket body parts are a 50/50 shot. Some are very good quality and fit just like factory parts. Others are cheap quality and have a horrible fit that will require tons of labor to make them fit correctly.

My experience is similar to cl-2's, 50/50. The metal was a lighter gauge also. These were not Dakota parts.

I bought a replacement fender for 89 bucks. No fitment issues what so ever. If you ended up paying $600 bucks for two fenders I dont feel bad for because you are retarded. But to answer your question, I had no problems and they look, feel, fit the same.

Who pays retail?

Do a little digging around at salvage yards, and you can probably find them for $50-100 each. That's what I did for my last car. I had to drive 2 hours to pick up the fender but it was worth it to save $$$... plus it was my factory color.

There are also some salvage yard websites, car-part.com I think, cuts down on the # of phone calls you have to make.

I've got two fenders. Need to get rust-free, dirt free fenders.
Mine have some partial surface rust inside the panels, and who knows where else.

Truck is completely stripped down and getting ready for primer.

Staying away from junk yards for body parts.
Right now, I am trying to keep the vehicle rust-free.

I would hate to have put all this time into it, then see rust bubbles a few months down the road.

i'd go the junkyard route and just check them over and make sure theres no rust before you buy them

if you get replacement fenders, just look for a wrecked 04 dakota, I know that the 04s were made of Galv metal, which rusts veryy slow, is why alot of the quad cab dakotas are still in reallly good shape
