I have a '02 Durango with the 5.9L motor that's no good so I'm on the hunt for a replacement motor. Looking at car-part.com it seems that 2002-2003 are the engines that directly swap into my Durango but I know from past experience often you can use other year motors it just might require swapping some sensors from the old motor to the new one.

So I'm curious, what years of Dodge can I use the 5.9L block in my '02 with fairly minimal effort? I found a '01 truck and a '99 Durango at the local wreckers both with 5.9L motors, but I don't know if they'll work.

Thanks

It's more than swapping sensors, in some cases you'll need the accompanying wire harness of the new engine, along with the PCM for it to run without issue. The problem you'll might run into is a rough running engine if you swap the block only, and you'll need to get it properly tuned with the old PCM. I'd stick with a newer block anyway unless you want to get a proper rebuild. I can't say for certain if the block from other years are direct replacement as throughout the years there have been changes to the vehicle as a whole, although I don't think it'll affect swapping the engines. A good local shop will know, or even a performance/tuner shop in the area.

As far as I know, a 5.9 Mag is a 5.9 Mag whether it's a 96 or 03.

That being said, you're probably right, just swapping your sensors, etc. Small shit like that.

Any update on a clear answer for this? I have 156,000 on my D's motor and Iv been looking for a donar 5.9 to strip down and build up from scratch with some minor upgrades. Once done I want to drop it in and do the same to my factory motor. Iv been searching high and low. So far I have found a 2000 RT with a junk tranny for 800 bucks and a 2001 Ram 5.9l motor for 180.00. I dont know which to go with.

all magnum 360's are the same, like misfit said you might just have to swap your sensors onto the new engine, and keep your harness and PCM

From what i know any 5.9 from 1993 to 2003 will fit . the block itself will fit just like the others says about some plugs are different . i have done a 5.2 to 5.9 swap with transmission swap . i used a 5.9 from 1997 out of a Ram for my durango 1999 and a 46re from a dakota rt 2000 .

The 5.9 from 97 has 235 HP while the 5.9 from 98/03 has 245 HP. it is pcm related . so the 5.9 from 1997 also has 245 hp in my 99 durango instead of 235hp

Go for it. Just make sure that the sensors are swapped and the injectors are the same style connector.

I have a 2001 Ram 4 wheel drive 1500 I also have a 2002 Ram 4 wheel drive 1500 both the 360 engine. 02 was the first year of the independent front suspension and has a different oil pan than the 01 through 94 model. I'm not sure about the exhaust manifolds. I would like to know if anybody has done the swap from 94 to 01 360 magnum to make fit in a 02 4x4 360 magnum truck .

Bumping this up as I have the same issue and don’t see a clear answer.

I have a 2003 dakota 5.9 and need a replacement motor.

Local salvage yard has a 01 5.9 with 90k and a 02 5.9 with 150k.

Interchange shows only 2002-2003 motors working. What needs to be changed on the 01 motor to use in my 03? Or am I better off to go with the much higher mile 2002 motor?

Thanks,

Chris
