A friend of mine at work recently suggested putting a turbo on my, now 13 year old, dakota. I told him that at the moment, no one makes a bolt on turbo kit for it and he said to get a universal rear mount kit from STS. I liked the idea of it and said I would think about it. The next day he suggested that we just make the kit ourselves, get the turbo, tubing, and mount it up. We thought the best plan would be to weld custom headers, then from there make an almost true dual exhaust and put twin turbos on, smaller turbos of course (We guessed T3T4?). I'd like to shoot for about 500hp at the wheels. He does have experience in setting up turbos and we do know it won't be easy necessarily, but he thinks we can do it. Now my question : is this the correct way of going about this? Or would one slightly bigger turbo be the better way to go? And if this is a good route to go, is the turbo size correct?

Sounds like the man I need to speak with!

I think we're going to try and put a "small" cummins turbo instead of twins. Hell, we still might put twin cummins turbos!

Be prepared to say goodbye to your engine. the 4.7 can barely handle the 235hp that it makes stock without blowing a head gasket, or cooling the oil. 500 hp at the wheels is beyond the stock engine limits. If you are going to do it, leave the stock manifolds(headers make no difference on a remote turbo, and will be prone to cracking(done it), single 2.5 inch exhaust into the turbo to keep the velocity up, and wrap the exhaust before the turbo to keep in heat. DO NOT use a t3 exhaust housing, you need a t4 or it will choke it out. My t3 was too small for a 3.9. Just put a t4, 5-6 lbs in it, keep it simple and (reliable), enjoy the extra 100 hp, and don't get greedy or you will regret it...just my opinion(ive done 2 remote turbo set ups and learned most all this from my mistakes)

well give me a couple of months and ill let you know i have my hy35 on the way now and plan on doing a remote on my ram. the motor will hold the power my only concern is my trans. not being able to hold the power. the bottom of the 4.7 is rock solid with the exception of the pistons and the top ring only being about an 1/8 of an inch from the top but a plan on doing aftermaket pistons and droping my CR to 8:1 that way a can go over 10 psi. I would like 12-15psi and would like/hope to get around 400 at the rears
