Hey everyone, long-time lurker, first-time poster. Apologies in advance for the length of this post.

This summer (2022) I plan on finally upgrading my V6 Dak to eight cylinders. Originally my thought was to keep it real simple and just drop in a 318 TBI from the same year, change over the accessories and swap the ECU/SMEC with the V8 one. I live in Cali so this would be the easiest way to keep it passing smog without going into legal gray areas.

But then I got to thinking, and I'm wondering how difficult it would be to drop in a 5.2 Magnum for the better power, gas mileage, aftermarket... The Magnum is better than the TBI in almost every way, near as I can tell. There are obviously a few big issues with this: I know I'd need at least a new wiring harness and a new ECU. But beyond that, I have a lot of questions and not a lot of answers.

Are there other things that I need to swap my TBI V6 for a TBI 5.2 or a Magnum? Will the 42RH tranny that's in there right now hold up against the extra 105 horses and 100 extra lb-ft of the Magnum? How much can I get away with before I turn the 7-1/4 open rear into a bag of rocks?

I'll only have about a week to get the swap done, so I know simpler is better.

Any advice on the motor swap, trans and rear end requirements is more than welcome.
