Would be better to swap in a Hemi 5.7, newer 4.7's don't drop right in. Can't speak for myself but I'm guessing they are both about as hard to do, with much better power and aftermarket support for the 5.7 Hemi.

No one has done it as far as I know. The 08 has dual spark-plugs and uses the NGC PCM (mid '02 up) with a different tone ring on the crank from the earlier JTEC PCM. The engine should bolt right in. You would also need AIR-RAMs billet throttle body adapter to get rid of the flyby-wire throttle body.

The 2008 4.7L is making nearly just as much as the HEMI when it debuted in 2003... Add a few bolt on's and it will be a well worth while transplant and a whole lot easier and stand toe to toe with most HEMI's...

So to answer the question, YES it can be done. There are a few Ram owners who have done this swap. You would need to swap the tone rings and step down to one plug...just leave the un-used spark plug in place or install a set screw in all the unused plug holes.

Most all the sensors on the later 4.7L can be used on the newer one.

You will need the throttle body adapter plates to install your cable throttle body to the "Fly By Wire" throttle body.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

What are you talking about on the plugs? ONE coil fires TWO spark plugs. The firing orders are the same. Use your adapters, swap tone rings, and get a SCT program. It would be more than worth it. 310 HP/330 TQ.

I wasn't sure if our ignition system would see the dual coil/plug as a problem and not have the needed voltage to fire them since it was designed for a single coil plug/coil set up. Kind of like the HEMI trucks when they run Shorty wires under boost or Nitrous... I have not done the swap myself so I have not tested or experienced that set up yet.

Thanks for the info to my question.I would also like know if the wiring harness and or the computer would need to be changed for this engine swap, and any info on where to find the adapters and sct programs mentioned by FASTQC4.7. Thanks again!

Speaking as somebody who actually did a cross-platform engine exchange on a Chrysler product, I can tell you this:

It should be possible to swap in a 2008 4.7L V8 in place of a 2001. You will most likely have to swap cam and crank tone wheels, and you will more than likely have to swap out the engine wiring harness. You might could get away with using 2008 cam and crank sensors if the sensor holes are themselves physically different (such as hole size or mounting bolt placement), but there is the possibility you'd have to splice them into the 2001 harness. That's not too hard to do.

The ignition system? Might could be a challenge, but I tend to doubt it. The most challenging part of this is, again, the possibility of splicing in the 2008 COP ignitors onto the 2001 wiring harness.

The big problem with the 2008 swap would be that the 2008 engine is throttle-by-wire, instead of a more traditional throttle cable arrangement that the 2001 engine has. This is the reason why you'd need the 2001 harness.

Well I am running the 4.7 electronics at this very moment on my 5.7 swap. I am not boosted yet, but I understand what you are getting at. However I could not see running a single spark plug in a chamber designed to work with dual plugs working out very well. I would think that the shape would be designed to work with both plugs and efficiency and power would suffer if you ran a single plug.

a 2008 4.7L swap into a 2001 would not be that big of a deal...
He can run his 2001 harness if he swaps out the crank & cam tone rings.

He can run his "cable" throttle body with our adapter plates.

I do suggest that he invest in SCT since his 2001 factory tune is not as good as the 2008 factory tune.

The timing and fuel maps will be very different. I have never seen a stock fuel or timing map from an 08+ engine but given the nature of the engine I know they will be different. I will also mention that the 3.7 has an identical compression ratio, piston, and combustion chamber design to the older 4.7s and ran different maps as well.

But as far as the physical ignition being a problem. The 4.7 PCM will fire the newer 4.7 or 5.7 for that matter coils just fine. I am missfire free all the way to redline and probably beyond.

The bolt ons to give a 4.7 as much power as a Hemi are VERY expensive. It would be a headache either way "install a 08' 4.7" OR "install a 5.7"-Hemi with 345hp.from the factory. 4.7...the computers are different,"You have two"TCM-PCM, 08' has one. The only way I would do it is if someone was GIVING me the 08'-4.7..
I would put a Hemi in it..Mines a 2001 Dakota Quad cab with 2004,5.7 Hemi.

I think you have over analyzed it. He can run the 2008 4.7L with his current PCM... Most all the sensors are the same so it would almost be a plug and play. There is no need to use the 08 harness or PCM's...

So it would be rather easy... the only thing that would toss him in for a loop would be mounting his 1999-2007 3-bolt throttle body to the 2008 intake manifold which has a 4-bolt throttle body.... And we have that covered. Our throttle body adapter plates make that an easy bolt on swap.

Since the Throttle body hoses the TPS and IAC, the intake manifold hoses the MAP and the intake has the IAT sensor... the CAM and Crank sensors would be the same... If he had to so any modifying to the harness it would be very minor if any at all.

Yes... that is a big one to forget... But it would not take too long to swap out the tone ring on the crank... with the engine out of the truck, it may take a day if your really really slow and want to take your time. But once thats swapped its all down hill from there.

Swapping the tone ring isn't bad at all. I could have finished it in less than a day if I had wanted to on my first time. Don't let that scare you off. If you know how to use a torque wrench you'll get it.
