I just bought a 98 Durango from an individual and he told me the head unit was bad and needed replaced. I turned the stereo on and out of all 4 door woofers and 2 front door tweeters, the only thing getting sound out is the 2 separate tweeters. I noticed the 4 woofers are not the infinity original ones but have been replaced by 6.5 Rockford fosgate speakers. Which have no sound at all. It still has the factory head unit and amp installed. Does anyone know why the 6.5 RF door speakers are not working? Please help. Thanks

First guess is that they were wired up wrong; there's four wires to an Infinity speaker until the separate amp was introduced. Two were power to the on-speaker amp, two were high level (speaker) inputs to said amp.

Later ones used a stand alone amplifier.

Jeremy Schrag over on AllPar.COM is probably the definitive author on Chrysler sound systems; start at Infinity Amplifiers in Chrysler Cars | Allpar Forums and check his other postings.

It could also be that the original installer screwed the pooch in the install; I'd check that out also.

Ok thanks for the advise, I'll check the hookups at the speakers. I just didn't want to tear the door panels open until I had a clue as to what the problem might be. I have the separate amp that is mounted behind the passenger side kick panel and I've read that it's a 2 ohm so I wasn't sure if the amp would power the 4 ohm fosgates with the factory head unit as well. I'll check them out and give update as to what I find out. Thanks

The factory amp will power the 4 ohm speakers fine, but at a reduced power level.

I'd rewire, and put my own amp in, before I ran that factory amp with some fosgates.

Could be wrong here but if they were stock i’d say they might be shot. I replaced mine in my 99 slt 5.2 w/Kenwoods and had to solder them in place. Are the wires soldered on? If not they could be wired wrong. Check the Dodge Manual Wiring Diagram.

I figured it out, had to reconnect each door speaker. When the previous owner put the fosgates in they did terrible connection jobs. One of the wires on each speaker was broken at the connector end at the crimp site. Plus I discovered that the volume control on the factory head unit is possibly dirty or wore out as it is partly non responsive or turns volume up when trying to turn the volume down and then sound crackles and fades out. I put a different factory head unit in and it works just fine, and sounds fairly decent just need more bass. Any recommendations on a good quality cheap amp and subwoofer that I can run perhaps with the factory head unit?
