Hello all. I did a couple different searches and didn't see what I was looking for.

My question is this. My durango doesn't have the tow package. Is there a place I can get a factory tow set up?

From what I've gathered durangos that came with the tow package had a better radiator, a trans cooler (other then the one in the rad), a 7pin connector and maybe other stuff. Please let me know if I'm missing something.

Is it possible to put a factory package on one that didn't come with it? The fuse spots are available in the block.

This picture is what came into work the other day. I like that the connector is attached to the hitch and not the bumper. It was a Dakota sport though.

You are missing the high output alternator and the built trailer brake controller plug but that is on all Dakota's and Durango's.
As for making it a factory setup from not having it, it is doable but you will need access to a donor vehicle's VIN to verify it had the factory tow package, because the dealer one did not come with some of the package and in some cases, was not worth it and would be better off getting factory package in the first place.

I have the factory 136amp alt. Was there one higher then that?

Also, what makes getting say dealer parts different then Factory? I mean all the fuse spots are in the block and labeled so wouldn't the truck be pre-wired for it?

Also if I do find a donor is there a specific year range I need? Also what exactly would need to come off of the Donor besides hitch and connector? And where on the Donor would these items be located?

The dealer tow package install doesn't include the trans cooler and what they did before was tap into the tail light harness which has been known to cause problems with the tail lights not working.
It is best to find the same model year as the donor to minimize the amount time of splicing wires.

So what you're saying is the factory is more plug and play? I like that better then splicing any day.

However when it comes to the trans cooler I can get an oem one on rockauto. Only thing I wouldn't know is how the lines would run. My truck now has the trans "warmer" inside the radiator. So the trans lines go straight to the radiator. Guess I'd be able to tell looking at the Donor.

So correct me if I'm wrong but here's what I would need from donor:

Hitch
Trailer connector
Associated wiring and fuses
Trailer brake controller
Trans cooler
Cooler lines

Anyone know where brake controller is located?

I had my dealer install all of it when I bought the DURANGO IN 2001. It came with all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive hi and low selector.

Here is my under-dash location of the trailer brake controller module.
