i need some advice. for about a year now. my 2000 dakota 2WD has been making a very strange noise coming from the rear end. It only happens when i turn corners at slow speeds and with the steering wheel turned 1/2 to full rotation.

it is the 8.25" 10-bolt LSD. w/ 3.55 gears

now my question is.

there is a local scrap dealer who has the 12 bolt axel assembly with 3.92 running gear and i believe disc brakes. he wants $800. but, he told me it was off a 4x4.

is there any difference?

how much heavier is this axel?

how much stronger is this axel?

Will it bolt on with no problems?

First try to change out the gear oil in the axle housing. More and likely has worn enough to cause the limited slip, to actually start chattering(likely noise you hear in turns and such). Upon doing so, get a tube of friction modifier. Some autoparts stores sell it. Put that in first before putting in the gear oil. About the other size axle housing, it is stronger. Not sure on weighing more, and not sure about directly bolting up to it or not.
